When something terrible has happened to lead you to legal help like this, you want people who you know are in your corner - you’ll find that here. I can’t believe I’m finally at the stage where I can write this review. Tom and Anne (the paralegal I worked with) at Maxwell Graham ushered me through four long years of healing and trying to settle my personal injury case. I would recommend this law firm and specifically Tom to anyone I know. I found them through a recommendation myself, and I am so grateful for that. I have no clue how I could have gotten through this experience without Anne and Tom’s guidance. Through all of the challenges, they were both so consistent in reassuring me and fighting for what I wanted. I’m fairly young to have experienced an injury requiring me to seek legal help, Tom and Anne were always gracious and kind in helping translate everything that was happening into language I could understand. I spoke with Anne regularly, her humor and honesty was extremely refreshing and comforting during the journey of my case. Tom fiercely advocated for me, and made me feel like I had a true fighter on my side. I trusted the team at Maxwell Graham completely. The entire office is full of approachable, kind people who genuinely want the best for you. Just talk to them, I can pretty much guarantee you’ll want to work with them too.

The Maxwell-Graham Law firm came highly recommended to me by my estate attorney following my husband’s unexpected death due to an allergic reaction to a commonly used drug. Rebeccah, Mike and their team did a careful review of my husband’s medical records and all the issues related to a malpractice claim. They were able to answer all of our many questions carefully, confidently and kindly. They provided us with detailed answers that showed us how thorough and capable their team is in supporting clients as they navigate the difficult path forward following the accidental death of a loved one. We are grateful for the care, kindness and professionalism shown to our family by Rebeccah, Mike and their team.

From the very first consultation, Dan was professional, knowledgeable, and reassuring. He took the time to explain the process and answered all my questions thoroughly. I couldn’t believe the outcome! I highly recommend Dan if you need help with a traffic ticket. He truly knows what he's doing and is committed to achieving the best results for his clients!

We had a rather large construction defect (two retaining walls) with our newly built home that affected the whole 48 unit development. The builder was a national publicly traded company (ticker symbol: LNNR) Fortune 500 Company who refused to cooperate (or even communicate) with the Condominium Owners Association to resolve the issue. We enlisted the help of Flanagan-Strauss and were able to settle out of court (after much negotiation) for approximately the amount needed for the remediation. I don’t think it would’ve ever happened if we hadn’t retained this firm.

To whom it may concern: In 2010 after taking control of the homeowners’ association from the developer, we had a building inspection that revealed significant defects in workmanship and and materials. From discussions with members of other homeowners’ associations, reading guidance articles in homeowners’ association publications, and talking with the inspecting engineer, we know we were going to have to seek out expert legal advice on how to best proceed to insure all defects got corrected. In looking for legal experts dealing with condominium defect claims we talked with those most highly recommend and interviewed them. In a meeting with our board of directors Leonard Flanagan presented the board with the path this process would most likely take, the options that would be presented to us during this period, and a very realistic assessment of the likely results. He was retained shortly after this meeting based on our perception of the quality approach he had laid out. During his investigative work for us he was able to determine there were six insurance companies that might be involved in liability rather than just the one that the developer had told us to contact. His investigative team also found significant structural defects that were not know to us and not uncovered in the previous inspections. For the past five years, Leonard has successfully guided us through settlement discussions with some insurance companies, mediation negotiations with others and a jury trial with a third. Throughout this activity, he has always kept the board fully informed of our options and expectations, while we were making decisions on how to best proceed. His preparations both for negotiations and trial have been exemplary and we the homeowners’ have benefited from his thoroughness and dedication to detail. We, as a board, would highly recommend Leonard Flanagan to anyone seeking expert legal counsel on condominium defect issues, or any of his other specialties.

We recently encountered a surprising boundary dispute with the neighbor in the middle of closing a sale of our property. Stu worked tirelessly with the buyers' counsel, our broker, and us to draft and complete two Easement Agreements and an addendum to the Purchase & Sale Agreement so that the closing process was not adversely impacted but completed in a timely manner. Being able to grasp the whole picture, Stu prepared those documents thoroughly to cover many aspects of the issue involved. We truly appreciate Stu's diligence in handling our case and his willingness to offer extra assistance should the needs arise.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Issaquah, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
