My divorce involved custody of a minor and asset issues. In addition, my wife's overseas parents paid carte blanche for her attorneys (there were four in succession), who pursued multiple phantom issues put forth by my wife. Gretchen handled the legal issues superbly and patiently steered the process to the point where my wife perjured herself on a very sensitive issue. I never doubted that Gretchen knew exactly how to protect my best interests and those of my son. The process was tortuous, of course, but I was always completely confident about Gretchen's attention to the case and her efforts on my behalf. Most importantly, she took my case to heart. She cared about the outcome and about my and my son's well-being. Due to Gretchen's diligence I have joint custody and an extremely equitable parenting plan and support plan. I recommend her wholeheartedly.

I retained Gretchen Neale as counsel in early 2012 to assist me with a minor modification to my parenting plan agreement. I am very pleased with my end result. Gretchen was attentive and responsive and a bull dog when I needed her to be. There was a short time that she was away on maternity leave and I was passed off to another lawyer in her firm: Jillian Pressnall. My experience as represented by Pressnall was absolutely horrible in comparison as with her I felt abandoned and alone. The only reason I did not leave the firm at that point was because I knew the approximate return date for Gretchen Neale so I dug my heals in and waited. Upon Gretchen's return, I again felt again that I had a lawyer that was attentive and responsive. Gretchen is a petite woman with balls of steel. I highly recommend.

When I retained the services of Gretchen Neale , I thought I was retaining a high level practitioner , a fluid attorney to represent my position throughout my dissolution process , it became very apparent in court I had mad a sub-par decision ,her court demeanor was to be completely steamrolled by opposing council and then the only response from her to the judge was "Certainly" ? . I understand the etiquette and demeanor necessary in a courtroom. However when it was her turn to speak she was extremely Green in her ability to articulate to the court her clients position effectively , thus proving her inability to professionally argue many viable points so as to help her client standing beside her. The office setting has shown a number of inconsistencies , Except for Billing efficiency , I found my self receiving letters from the court outlining that I was in illegal non compliance (three times) for paperwork not submitted , I was quite shocked as I had been so diligent on my end of anything I needed to complete..... After repeated emails and phone calls, Gretchen finally did the necessary court paperwork and outlined to me the steps I needed to do , I find this highly incompetent that a attorney specializing in dissolution would not keep her clients up to speed and ahead of the process with all necessary paperwork/classes ect required , so everything is done timely and efficiently , you see this is why people hire specialized attorneys so all the "paperwork" is efficiently taken care of and managed for the client.... Getting a divorce can be a difficult process , combining those difficulties with a inexperienced and ineffective attorney can prove Very difficult and expensive ,my first hand experience with Gretchen Neale and her offices leeds to one Final conclusion.... MOVE ON..........

Our agency used Mike, and others, in handling a very complex long term contract negotiation between a couple dozen potential parties. The planning period for the negotiation took more than a decade. The contract itself took a few years. During this time period I found Mike to be highly skilled and adept at identifying troublespots and areas where issues needed to be clarified in the contract. His professionalism and demeanor was valuable in setting a positive atmosphere for the negotiations and ultimately achieving a successful outcome. We were extremely pleased with the quality and timeliness of his legal effort, and the success that he helped us achieve.

I consider Mike Hanis to be "the" best attorney I have ever worked with. Besides his years of experience with the judiciary system his approach to a problematic situation is irrefutably methodical, organized and concise. I appreciate Mike's sense of candor while maintaining a high level of professionalism. I highly recommend Michael Hanis for any one in need of an attorney.

She has helped my family so much when we decided to start making our estate plan. While we were meeting with her, she was very helpful and educated on what we needed and what we didn't. She made the difficult decisions easy. I have recommended her to all my friends and family. I just want to say thank you, and I think she is so great. Totally recommend her to anyone in need of help with their estate plan or real estate.

I recently sold my house and the buyer recommended that we have Julie Christenson act as escrow agent. I must admit that I had a bit of trepidation at first about accepting a buyer recommended attorney. However, Julie has done a truly excellent job for me as seller and I believe for the buyer as well. An unexpected complication arose during my home sale; there was an unknown 29 year old lien against my property by a credit union that no longer existed under its original name. Julie helped discover their present identity and the lien was quickly released. I needed a one week 'delayed possession' beyond the closing date to finish clearing my personal property. For this there was a $5000 holdback. After that week I was out and Julie saw to it that the holdback money was returned very expeditiously. Julie is on the ball and one could not ask for a more diligent and, above all, effective professional. Mike

I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Adam Heyman. I’m a successful heavy equipment operator. This man saved my life after I was falsely arrested in Brooklyn, N.Y. and charged with weapons possession facing a very long prison sentence. This man is very passionate about his work and leaves no stone unturned. Vert witty and passionate about winning. A force to be reckoned with, I look at my kids everyday and think of Adam and how he saved my life.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kent, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
