Cons

2
Handling of complex medical cases and accommodating client needs
“First, he had me sign a paper and submit it to my health insurance company stating I had been in a car accident and was being represented in a lawsuit. Never sign this form, you will end up having to file for bankruptcy.”

Mr. Trudell and his office staff are top notch, A+. My business law firm referred him when I was in a vehicle accident, and I’m extremely satisfied with how the process was handled. No accident case plays out perfectly, but his office maximized my interest at every turn. Highly recommended, and would work with them again any time! Thanks Pat, Barbara, and Rachel.

I met with Pat Trudell through a recommendation from a friend. Pat listened to me, returned my calls promptly, explained the process and became a trusted partner in my accident ordeal. He kept me informed of every step. Also, all the people in his office are very courteous and professional. The final outcome was very good. I can’t say enough about how I was treated and highly recommend Pat Trudell.

In 2010 I suffered a head injury which caused a concussion syndrome affecting my reading comprehension, sight and hearing and causing seizures and a number of other health problems. First, Trudel insisted I read a long article/book he wrote called The Zen of Brain Injury, or something like that. I couldn't read the instructions on prescription bottles, let alone a boring article he wrote about surviving brain trauma. First, he had me sign a paper and submit it to my health insurance company stating I had been in a car accident and was being represented in a lawsuit. This resulted in the company refusing to cover any of my medical treatment and I had to rely on the car insurance company of the driver of the car in the accident to cover my treatment, yeah good luck. Never sign this form, you will end up having to file for bankruptcy. He called me "stupid" for telling my physician that the medication she gave me for pain led to a subsequent fender bender. After several months, he dropped me for not signing a paper he mailed to me. I got an envelope, but I did not understand what it was. I then had to deal with the driver's insurance company to get a tiny settlement for a major car accident leading to permanent disability. I couldn't fill out the paperwork I needed to complete the lawsuit he started. This guy is really, really bad news, you are forewarned. I hope people see this before signing any papers for Patrick Trudel to represent you. I have a word to describe this "man" but it is not printable.

James not only helped me navigate a very difficult and stressful situation he also took the time to explain the process to me. This was my first and hopefully last personal injury claim. I had no idea what I was up against. Jim came through for me like a champion. He was there when I needed him, had questions or just needed to have things explain to me. A real nice man and a very good lawyer. Thank you so much.

I had the opportunity to hire Mr. Beard on two separate occasions. One was a career ending injury from commercial crab fishing in Alaska. Back at the end of 2003. He worked tirelessly on this lawsuit until the end. Which took almost two full years to settle. He kept in contact and informed on every issue of this case. With vary favorable results for me. Then in 2012 I was given the chance to try a return to the commercial fisheries. All was going good for the first few seasons. Then on Halloween night. A crew member lost control of a crab pot. Striking me in the head. Leaving me with a severe head injury. After receiving zero help for my injuries from the vessels owners. I had no choice but to again seek out Mr. Beard for his help. Without hesitation, he was helping me. Instantly things changed. My doctors started actually helping me. Bills started to get paid. And the owners of the boat finally admitted that I was hurt on the boat. Since they wouldn't acknowledge this before Mr. Beard stepped into help. When he did, things happened fast. My head injury left me with a TBI which was severe. Which led to many medications and bad side effects. In the end. Because of all of this. I tried to take my life. Mr. Beard stood by my side. Still doing everything possible for me and my family, to get through this horrific ordeal. Which thankfully I did. He never gave up on me. When many others had. This may have been possibly one of the most difficult cases he may have ever faced. In my opinion, I'm sure it was. Since the TBI, suicide attempt, coma and very long hospital stay. And the many issues involved in any lawsuit. After about three years of his relentless work he put in for me. He secured me a favorable settlement, that will let me live my life, as I had before these horrific injuries. He will work non-stop. Without exception for you. He will tell you straight, the pros, cons and risks of the lawsuit. Mr Beard, in my opinion. Is one of the most knowledgeable, best versed attorney in the maritime field. In the end, he is one of the best. I wouldn't want anyone else representing me, when my whole future is at stake.

Once James became involved in our bankruptcy, things were much easier to understand and we were able to resolve our issues. I trust him completely and appreciated both his sensitivity and candor as needed. Our outcome was positive and we have fully recovered due to his help.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Kirkland, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
