Alan stepped in when my case was obviously taking a nose dive due to my other attorney's incompetence. Alan prepared to cross a very important witness, and very impressively destroyed her by catching her on clear lies, double standards, and clearly discriminatory behavior. He was impressive thinking fast on his feet, and bringing his questioning get to clear points. He is spectacular in court!

I was referred to Alan Middleton by another attorney and I was very happy with his services. At our first meeting Alan was very responsive to all my questions and he was very generous with his time and legal advice. He spent over two hours reviewing the facts of my legal issues at no charge to me. He worked diligently on my case and drafted an excellent response to the court for me. As a small business owner it made a major impact on the continued success of my company to have the sound legal advice of Alan Middleton.I would highly recommend Alan as a trusted advisor and attorney.

Alan was awesome, our case lasted 7 years and ended up in the supreme court, Alan was the lead attorney every step of the way, very thoughtful, very sharp, could not have gone the distance without Alan completely managing the entire process.

It was a tough case. I wasn't easy to deal with. Scott was able to get nearly all the insurance policy, and saw this through until the impossible happened. Somehow he got a bank to give me an account. Still scratching my head as to how he did that, but let's not look gift horses in the mouth. His service was above and beyond what is required. He even got my antibiotics when I was still to sore to move. He got my 2000 dollars for a bicycle I paid 250 for and it was only worth 750 new. There were a couple parts having experienced I would have not been so head strong about. I might not rank so high if I had a client feedback... Lol, I was a pain. Scott is talented, mature, complete and stable.

Brooks was amazing in guiding me thru the collaborative divorce process. She was reassuring when I doubted my own resolve and yet she was honest when conveying what would be a fair and reasonable outcome for both parties. She was encouraging when she knew I needed to step up and yet she also knew when she needed to step in. I found that Brooks personal experiences and her years of working with others have given her an incredible ability to relate in a genuine and thoughtful way. I am truly grateful for her support, patience and understanding as I worked thru one of the most challenging times for myself and my family. I am happy with the outcome of the divorce. I highly recommend her as a collaborative divorce attorney and more importantly as a counsel who guides her clients thru what, at times can be, a trying and emotional journey.

I highly recommend Brooks as a divorce lawyer. She was the perfect balance of professional and personal. During our consultation, she listened carefully to my specific concerns and goals and provided legal suggestions and guidance about the process. She connected me with great neutral professionals to help with asset division and development of a parenting plan. Throughout the process, she was responsive and very thorough. She knows her stuff! She worked very hard to help me meet a tight filing deadline, which kept the costs down. She always kept conversations centered around the best interests of the kids, which made for a very successful process. Thank you, Brooks!

I felt railroaded into using Brooks and wish I'd taken the time to research it further. I'd never been divorced and she was recommended after my first lawyer fell through. She did not stand up for me; if anything I felt like she was joining ranks with my ex and her attorney. Would not recommend, she did not represent me or my wishes

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Forest Park, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
