Autumn worked incredibly hard on my behalf in a complicated child support case five years after my divorce, following a move to Washington from another state. At every point, Autumn provided compassionate but direct counsel, and tried to save me time and money by offering fair solutions to opposing counsel. When these were rejected, she was in absolute lockstep with me preparing for court. I was a very involved client but know nothing about the law, and Autumn both trusted me to work on certain aspects of the case but provided the direction and honest advice that was needed at every point. In court, Autumn was calm, confident, prepared, and steady. The respect that judges have for this kind of ethical and grounded approach is reassuring as a client. Not every lawyer shares these qualities. I had this kind of relationship with my previous lawyer in another state, but when I first moved to Washington I had a horrible experience with a different lawyer for whom I had to file a complaint with the Washington State Bar. With that lawyer I never knew what was going on, and he proceeded with the case in ways that I had explicitly said I was not comfortable with. I honestly don't know what would have happened if I hadn't found Autumn. She was different in every way. She was extremely responsive, paid attention to every detail, did not make outlandish promises, but instead gave practical counsel and followed through 100%. She did not stir up any drama (although there was plenty of opportunity in our case) but as opposing counsel escalated and played hardball, Autumn responded firmly. I felt we were being fair, but not being pushed around. The outcome in court, which is never guaranteed, was almost exactly what we had repeatedly offered opposing counsel- plus lawyer's fees from the other side. If you are looking for lawyer who is capable, works well with other lawyers, is experienced going to court but wise enough to try to keep you out of it if possible, and who will provide you honest and money-saving advice, I cannot recommend Autumn highly enough. I felt increasingly desperate and confused before switching to Autumn, and now everything is resolved and I have my life back again- it is a unique gift that a good lawyer can provide, and I am grateful.

Victor was great! I delayed in seeking help from the beginning. I wish I had gone to him sooner. He was very friendly, concise, and clear in explaining how my case was going.

Victor came highly recommended by my former staff. I researched him on his former firm and found that he has excellent reputations in WA area. Victor has worked on my case for well over 2 years. He tirelessly fought for me to ensure that my settlement is just and fair. He and his staff are great with communication, as well as always response quickly with any questions I may have no matter how trivial it is. I found Victor and his staff are super friendly. He is smart and knows what he is doing. I can't express my appreciation enough for what he has done for me. Highly Recommended!

Andrea represented me in case where I was accused of assaulting two minors. The case went to trial and I was acquitted of all charges. It was a stressful experience, and I was happy to have Andrea on my side. Her preparation was thorough. She left no stone uncovered during her investigation pretrial. She did a great job during trial too. I thought her questioning of the witnesses was perfect, and I was very impressed with her approach to questioning the two children who testified in the case. I also appreciated that she was very available for communication with me throughout the whole process. I hope to never again find myself in a similar situation, but if I do, I know who I will be calling!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Maple Valley, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
