Mr. Haroldson responded to a posted question of mine regarding a family law case Im currently involved in. His answer was genuinely thoughtful and empathetic to my situation, providing me with a solid understanding of what I could anticipate when going in front of a judge. I appreciated his reply so much that I sought out a 30min consultation with Mr. Haroldson in order to discuss more specific details regarding the best way for me to proceed in this situation. The consultation was at no cost to me which I was deeply grateful for him providing to me. During our conversation, he was upfront, honest and forward about his true thoughts with what I was going through and gave me the best he was able to within this appointment. Not only that, but he was also very generous to me in regards to his offered available services. If I decide to hire an attorney in this matter, hands down, I would contact Mr. Haroldson right away without hesitation. I feel completely confident that he would provide me with exceptional service and legal assistance. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of his time and the advice I received that day. Thank you so much.

Mr. Haroldson was courteous and professional even when the court-appointed attorneys were not. He gave me great legal advice and stopped the litigation from snowballing out of control in my father's guardianship case. (I was the fly in the ointment who contested my criminal brother's petition for guardianship.) Mr. Haroldson came to my rescue after my first attorney withdrew and another refused to accept my case. He is honest and honorable, a precious rarity in lawyers these days.

Mr. Haroldson is a very knowledgeable and focused lawyer. He listened to what I think needed to be done and then added his thoughts from his knowledge. He did all this in a very efficient manner. This kept costs to a minimum with excellent results. My thanks to him and his firm during a very difficult time for our family.

I was referred to Peter for my divorce - a complicated one given that my ex husband and I are both active duty military with a child. Peter counseled me at our first meeting- our behavior during our divorce would set the tone for the next 18 years of co-parenting. That stuck. Peter led me and advocated for me, called me out when I was being petty, and ultimately we reached an agreement that I feel is the absolute best for my son. Exhusband and I are both happy. Peter was always prompt, he was professional, easy to contact and very fair with his charges. Never felt nickel and dimed. I'm in the medical field- we become accustomed to disliking lawyers; then I found myself needing one. Peter has taught me the value of good counsel with the wonderful work he did for me. Don't hesitate; I couldn't recommend him more. I'm so glad I found him.

I also had an ugly divorce. He was mentally verbally financially controlling and abusive. I feel that Peter also did not believe me. It shocks me in this day and age that people still believe the abuser (man) and not the abused one (woman) It's so disturbing, sexist, and shocking. Peter didn't want to hear about it. He said he didn't have to believe me to be my lawyer. I said it was important that my lawyer believed me. To me! Then with a few days warning and 2 days before I had surgery he left the practice and dropped me after $17,000.00 of my money and he didn't fight for me , believe me, in fact I felt victimized again. I have almost no money left. Had to find and retain another lawyer. I feel like I was robbed ! Extremely unhappy with his lack of sympathy/ empathy and like I was just a pain in his neck that he couldn't wait to get rid of and move on. He was even referred to me by a family member of his!! I spoke to the Alliance group practice explaining that I was broke now, no further on than I was a year ago?? They should re imburse me some of the money. But I have not heard anything from them!! I would NEVER go there again!!

Autumn worked incredibly hard on my behalf in a complicated child support case five years after my divorce, following a move to Washington from another state. At every point, Autumn provided compassionate but direct counsel, and tried to save me time and money by offering fair solutions to opposing counsel. When these were rejected, she was in absolute lockstep with me preparing for court. I was a very involved client but know nothing about the law, and Autumn both trusted me to work on certain aspects of the case but provided the direction and honest advice that was needed at every point. In court, Autumn was calm, confident, prepared, and steady. The respect that judges have for this kind of ethical and grounded approach is reassuring as a client. Not every lawyer shares these qualities. I had this kind of relationship with my previous lawyer in another state, but when I first moved to Washington I had a horrible experience with a different lawyer for whom I had to file a complaint with the Washington State Bar. With that lawyer I never knew what was going on, and he proceeded with the case in ways that I had explicitly said I was not comfortable with. I honestly don't know what would have happened if I hadn't found Autumn. She was different in every way. She was extremely responsive, paid attention to every detail, did not make outlandish promises, but instead gave practical counsel and followed through 100%. She did not stir up any drama (although there was plenty of opportunity in our case) but as opposing counsel escalated and played hardball, Autumn responded firmly. I felt we were being fair, but not being pushed around. The outcome in court, which is never guaranteed, was almost exactly what we had repeatedly offered opposing counsel- plus lawyer's fees from the other side. If you are looking for lawyer who is capable, works well with other lawyers, is experienced going to court but wise enough to try to keep you out of it if possible, and who will provide you honest and money-saving advice, I cannot recommend Autumn highly enough. I felt increasingly desperate and confused before switching to Autumn, and now everything is resolved and I have my life back again- it is a unique gift that a good lawyer can provide, and I am grateful.

I'm not experienced with law, but at our first meeting Andrea listened patiently and communicated so I clearly understood our plan. Andrea kept me updated by phone and text regularly. She extended her commitment with me to finish the job! Andrea was able to win my case successfully!

Andrea represented me in case where I was accused of assaulting two minors. The case went to trial and I was acquitted of all charges. It was a stressful experience, and I was happy to have Andrea on my side. Her preparation was thorough. She left no stone uncovered during her investigation pretrial. She did a great job during trial too. I thought her questioning of the witnesses was perfect, and I was very impressed with her approach to questioning the two children who testified in the case. I also appreciated that she was very available for communication with me throughout the whole process. I hope to never again find myself in a similar situation, but if I do, I know who I will be calling!

I and my husband have unfortunately needed personal injury legal support multiple times and other members of our family have also. Our first car accident, we started the process with another lawyer which was unsuccessful. When we came to Janet it was later in the process and quite messy. Our personal injuries complicated our effectiveness in communicating and making the process smooth. This did not detour Janet. She simply was resourceful and compassionate with her handing of us, yet extremely focused on representing us to the highest caliber of professional excellence. It is almost hard to express all the ways she cared for us. We have referred Janet to anyone that has found themselves unfortunately in need of an excellent personal injury attorney! She simply is amazing at what she does.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Maple Valley, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
