I engaged Bert Sugayan to file startup paperwork and put in place the necessary starting documents for my single-member LLC in Washington state. Although it was a fairly straightforward operation, Bert set aside plenty of time at our initial meeting to listen to my situation and to ask lots of questions. By the end of our conversation, I felt confident that he understood where I was coming from and where I wanted to go, and, with his legal expertise, how he could help me achieve my goals. Bert has encouraged me to ask any question, any time. He and his staff are available, responsive, and personable regardless of the simplicity or complexity of a question. They make the necessary processes and legal paperwork understandable and painless. Bert also provided a package of basic contracts tailored to my industry; these have served me well over my first year of business. I would not hesitate to engage Bert again for matters of business law, nor to recommend him to a friend.

I couldn't be happier with Bert's counsel and willingness to go the extra mile. Bert helped me get my new business off the ground, providing sound and thoughtful advice, putting together all of the documents I need and tailoring them to meet the unique needs of my business, and a myriad of other services. Bert provides a great blend of experienced business acumen and legal advice that really makes a difference. For example, he put together not just the regular formal contractual documents I need, but also created a more "business" oriented version that will be easier for clients to accept, which is especially important when working with very large clients. In other words, Bert has that rare ability to turn complexity into simplicity, and thereby easy to accept. He also provided great business advice well above and beyond what I engaged him for. I strongly recommend Bert!

Norbert, or "Bert" as we call him, has become our go to trusted legal advisor for our business needs. We have found Bert to be extermely knowledgeable and responsive to our needs, which we find to be very valuable in todays fast paced business environment. Being a small business owner, I have found it difficult at times to find a lawyer that is willing to listen and be responsive. Our experiences with Bert have been very positive and we look forward to having him on our side for a long time. I would definetly recomend Bert for your businesses legal needs.

This testimonial is being written as a result of highly respected Bellevue family practice attorney Mary L. Gaudio more than successfully representing me in the recent dissolution of my marriage. First of all, her professional expertise and knowledge not only resulted in an equitable and positive outcome, but also rescued me from a colossal financial blunder, thus saving me a great deal of money. Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly, her incredible personal wisdom was of immeasurable assistance to me in my emotional and psychological healing and recovery from the grief, sorrow and deep, bitter disappointment over the failure of a forty-nine-year marriage!

I'm sure there are a lot of great family law attorneys out there, but after my experience with Mary, I can't imagine there being anyone better. The events that took place in trial were nothing short of miraculous. There is no way I would have had the results I had without the work that Mary and her office did on my behalf. Her knowledge, experience and professionalism is second to none. Every T was crossed and every I dotted. There is no doubt that anyone who hires Mary is receiving the best representation in town.

Jodi helped manage a very difficult family case of mine through to completion. I found her to be incredibly good at transcribing by situation into a precise plan or document. She is very smart and picked up on my issues in no time flat. I am happy to report that she brought my case to resolution in record time, didn't even need to go through mediation and no court case... thank you Jodi!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monroe, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
