Mr. Laws was in the Burlington courtroom while I was being indicted for malicious mischief. He was very helpful in explaining the process to me and provided information that I could use to pursue my defense. I really appreciate Mr. Laws.

Michael D. Laws persuaded me 8 years ago (at a very young age) to plead guilty and accept a deal to an offense I did not commit in order to lighten his case load. His strategy was “if we go to trial they could give you the maximum sentence which would be 2 years in prison”. Me being a fresh out of high school and recently enrolled in college young guy was deathly afraid of what prison would do to me so I took his “advice” and plead guilty. Now 8 years later with two kids I have trouble finding a job to support my family because of a charge that is on my record. Needless to say, would not recommend.

I have not had a very positive experience with public defenders. The public defender I had before Mr. Laws barely knew my name or carried what it was. so, when he quit his position and left my case up in the air. I didn't have much faith in whoever was going to take over my case. Mr. Laws however proved to be better then I could ever dream for. He really took time and showed passion to be there for everyone of his clients, and that's saying something because he has a lot! This really shows the type of character and lawyer he is. He well fight for you and make time for you no matter what. He never made me feel anything less then his most important client, and I know he has to do that with all his clients, because there was nothing special about me or my case. He just gave me a personal feeling of representation that really made me feel he was fighting for me, and that is not what you expect with a public defender. I can't recommend him more for legal representation he will fight for you to find the best resolution possible.

I was at ease having Chris on my side. Anyone who asks about finding a tough but fair attorney, he’s the one I recommend for top notch representation. The result was beyond my expectation.

I hired Mr. Pollino because I needed a divorce attorney. I can 100% say that he is the exact attorney I needed and I would recommend him to anyone. He made sure I was in the know about everything and took the time to answer my (many) questions. He worked hard and had my best interest in mind. In a difficult situation like I was in, I couldn't have asked for more.

I had been contemplating divorce for years but was scared, because it was a dangerous situation. I met with several attorneys and finally felt confident that Chris could handle what I facing in trying to leave a very complicated and messy domestic violence situation. The man I was trying to divorce was facing many criminal charges, fighting for our house, full custody and more.. Chris kept my children and me safe and in our family home with money coming in. The divorce was complicated and took a long time but Chris did not let my ex-husband bully or abuse us anymore. Chris pushed back and let the truth of what was happening show for the first time in years. It was such a relief to have Chris and Sandee take over and handle everything. I had been so worn down and exhausted from years of trying to make everything "ok" but to turn this over and put the stress into their hands saved our lives. I would highly recommend Chris for any family law issue. Chris won every small and large dispute we had to settle in court over the course of 14 months. I feel like he fought to give us our life back.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mount Vernon, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
