We secured Gary's service to protect our rights and our family from CPS, an agency who I found shows no respect for the law or our rights as citizens. Normally you would think you wouldn't have to get a lawyer if you were not in the wrong. Unfortunately that is not the case and this agency threatened us and tried to manipulate us several times throughout their "investigation". We were told they wanted access to our home to search for weapons and that we would need to answer all of their questions or risked having our four children taken from the home. This all was over my 15 year old son getting in a fight with another kid from school resulting in a black eye. Long story short Gary shut them down with his knowledge of the law and experience dealing with their corrupt tactics. I truly feel sorry for the low income families that this CPS agency clearly takes advantage of.

Mr. Preble listened to my case and seemed to know instinctively that the allegations against me were ridiculous and unfounded. There can be nothing worse than a CPS allegation. Mr. Preble seemed to intuitively understand the failures of such a system (CPS) and demonstrated consistent and an unwavering support of our rights as parents and as a nuclear family. Mr. Preble was accessible and explained each step of the process in terms that we could understand, avoiding too much legalese. He was respectful of cost. He demonstrated professionalism. He infused humor to ease the anxiety. He provided reassurance to help us navigate one of the most torturous experiences we have ever had to endure. Mr. Preble's staff were knowledgeable. They always provided answers to our questions and always made us feel welcome. We prevailed against CPS. We are so grateful to Mr. Preble for taking our case and seeing us through the process with grace, faith and dignity.

Mr. preble, is the lawyer I hired to defend my case against the state in a CPS allegation and subsequent appeal,he was kind courteous and understanding with all of the various details and strings of evidence related to the matter. He was willing to work with my unusual work schedule being in the military. He was clear concise and upfront in all of our dealings. I would with out hesitation recommend him for any legal matter that you may be facing. Without his work I would be struggling too have time with my children. He has been a great asset to me and my family and is willing to work and fight for my rights as a father he has my strongest possible recommendation.

Pros
1
Effective in defending clients in challenging cases, including against government agencies like CPS
“Gary Preble represented my company and Ministry and a family matter with CPS that I doubt anyone else would've touched. This case had huge implications for us and Gary succeeded beyond our expectations and is absolutely fearless even in a David and Goliath situation.”
2
Demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and accessibility in handling sensitive legal matters
“Mr. Preble was accessible and explained each step of the process in terms that we could understand, avoiding too much legalese. He was respectful of cost. He demonstrated professionalism. He infused humor to ease the anxiety. He provided reassurance to help us navigate one of the most torturous experiences we have ever had to endure.”
Cons
1
Lack of responsiveness and communication, leading to dissatisfaction with the service
“We simply never heard from him or his associate Kristin again. Since we had moved from Washington by that time we were unable to go to his office directly. I would never recommend an attorney that would just quit responding after agreeing to file a lawsuit on your behalf.”
2
Billing issues, including overcharging and inaccuracies
“Every time I talked to his paralegal trish she would always say she didn't know what was going on and hadn't been updated on the case and I always got the same old, same old line from them that Gary was working on far more important cases but they sure enjoyed my $6,000 plus checks. Most all the billing from the office was his full hourly rate not paralegal rate rip off.”

Ms. Anderson helped me through a family law issue that was somewhat complicated. She did a lot of research to build the case to help me. She went well above and beyond to get my case resolved positively and at no point did she take the easy way out. I’m extremely happy I had her to help me with my case and would highly recommend her.

Wendy was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end, and even after the fact. Such a breath of fresh air compared to the other lawyers I've dealt with - especially when it comes to ease to talk to, not nickel & diming us and completely keeping us abreast of the happenings in the case. She always got back to us right away, was upbeat and personable. Plus we WON the case! I'll be hiring her for all my lawyering needs from now on.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Olympia, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
