I'm disabled, limited money, and on the straight & narrow.. trying to live my life free of my previous troubles with WA legal system... When filling out the form for the background check to purchase a legal firearm, I said that I hadn't been in a 'psychiatric' facility as an adult,.. but it turns out I had turned 18 just a few days prior to the psych. Facility! Julie came to my rescue, was with me and had helped me through this every step of the way...., even now when I got a summons for a review hear after 2 yrs(which she both asked & got the judge and prosecutors approval, stating that if I didn't receive any new charges during the 2yr unsupervised probation, I WOULD NOT have to come back to the Clallam County District Court! I'm disabled, on SSI, I've got severe Social Anxiety & Panic Disorder in public, (Which are all okay, & I'm stable on my meds for the majority of the time, plus my new Service Dog in Training Chattam is a huge help, or he will be but he's in the process of training!) Julie was & is still doing a great job..., shes very caring and understanding, so when I received a summons, out of the blue -so 2 speak.. yesterday, regarding my case from 2 yrs ago, requesting that I appear for a review hearing,... Even after she had gotten me permission to not have to come back to court if I didn't get in trouble again..., and I contacted Julie immediately, and she is on it .., she said she is going to figure it out for me, and I'm once again so greatly appreciative for her skill, level of care & empathy, and her drive to take care of her clients in the best most beneficial way she can!

Joe wins cases... He is a shark in the courtroom. He wins because he has three gifts that other attorneys wish they had; CONFIDENCE, Joe is willing to go to trial and fight for his clients. He doesn't back down in trial, or in settlements, because Joe has a long history of winning really tough cases. INTELLIGENCE, Joe is on top of the every change and technicality in the Law, he wins many cases before they even go to trial because he is willing to put in the hard work and do the pre trial motions and hearings that many attorneys are unwilling to do. CHARISMA, Joe is the cool kid in the court room. He draws everyone in when he speaks. The jury wants be on Joe's team.. and that means they are on your team. Joe won my case, he saved me from having to do 10 years in prison for a crime I wasn't guilty of. I couldn't have had a better attorney fighting for me.

He handled a speeding ticket in Jefferson County for my daughter and it was dismissed with her presence required in court. She did not have to miss a day at college and it was money well spent!

Schodowski Law has represented me in several traffic infractions, including: traffic cameras, improper equipment (snow tires), (w)reckless driving, and speeding and Joe was able to have all of them reduced if not dismissed.

Rafael Urquia recently represented me in a lawsuit pertaining to injuries sustained from an incident with a dog. He gave me his full attention when I recounted the events of that day, and was sensitive and compassionate regarding the serious injuries I endured. Rafael was extremely generous with his time over the course of 21 months, and was successful in a mediation settlement. He is the best lawyer I have ever dealt with, and I would recommend him enthusiastically.

I was in a no-fault accident and the folks at Urquia Law were helpful from day one. Communication was stellar as I was always made aware of what was happening with the case and part of the decision-making with professionalism. I was awarded substantially more than if I tried to negotiate on my own and was able to move on with my life swiftly.

Even working pro bono. He is the best lawyer I've ever had. I'm a convicted felon, with multiple d.u.I.'s. I was treated with dignity and respect, despite my flaws. It gave me the desire to change my life around. He's as good as it gets. Creme de la creme.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Port Townsend, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
