I hired Hillary and she is the exact lawyer I needed and will use in the future. Hillary is definitely experienced and knows what she is doing. When in the court room she is very prepared and professional and knows exactly what to say. Hillary and Renee (her assistant) are very good at communicating. You will not be disappointed I have had a very difficult case but Hillary is very experienced and she knew how to deal with it. I will definitely use her in the future!

Hillary was recommended to me when my divorce became too complex and high conflict. Hillary was professional, understanding and amazing at all of our hearings and then at our trial. She is incredibly smart and knows the ins and outs of the law, is always prepared, and pays great attention to details. She is a warrior who fought hard for me and my kids and I would highly recommend her as being the best and was able to work miracles for us!

Hillary did an amazing job for me. My ex and his lawyer were throwing every curveball imaginable to disrupt, disarm and cause harm to my fragile state of emotional and financial ruin of a left over marriage. Hillary took over after I had to fire my previous lawyer who ran up the bill by responding to every outrageous thing my ex and his lawyer could dream up. I was living in a nightmare and Hillary came to the rescue. She picked up the pieces quickly and supported me as best as she could. She did not overcharge and indeed helped me to save money by letting me know that we didn't have to respond to every little crisis the other team was dreaming up. In the end I was lucky to have walked away with some of things from my nineteen year marriage. I should have hired Hillary from the beginning. She is incredibly smart, thinks on her feet and is supportive of her clients. We had a hard time at court and Hillary admitted it but it was through no fault of her own. She worked wonders at having my best friend and mother dismissed as his witnesses on the stand and I am forever grateful to her that she fought for my right to return to school to continue an education so that I could support myself after 19 years as a stay at home parent. From what I know now my case was very hard and messy but Hillary championed me through it with ongoing optimism. Thank you Hillary. Anyone who reads this needs to know that she and Renee her assistant really will have your best interest at heart and will work hard to help you no matter what gets thrown their way.

Unfortunately my divorce was less than amicable. I started with a different attorney and at my initial divorce hearing I was the one ordered out of the family home and ordered to pay full child support with 50/50 custody. I'm not saying it was my previous attorney's fault I was ordered to move out and pay child support, but that is what was handed to Hillary to help me with. She is very smart and worked very hard to build our case. I found the wheels of justice move very slow, but it was a slow steady process with Hillary. After 3 court dates Hillary was able to get my temporary orders (me being ordered out of the family home, 50/50 custody and me paying full child support) reversed. In the final court case (just over 7 months after the original temporary orders were given) I was granted full custody of my kids, my ex was ordered to pay me child support, and I was granted to be able to move back in the family home. It was absolutely AMAZING! I cannot thank Hillary and Renee enough. They worked so hard and put a lot into this case to help me. I feel beyond blessed for what Hillary did for my little family.

I interviewed twelve lawyers before I picked Ms. Holmes to represent me. The quality of questions she asked and how quickly she understood my situation was way beyond any of them. I researched her too and she graduated with honors and continues to serve on committee's throughout WA that represent women. She has stood by me the past six years whenever my ex tried to intimidate me further. She is precise, intelligent and factual in all her responses and my bills were very low as he had to pay most of them. I cannot recommend her enough. Her staff is also very caring and thorough. You will be in good hands if you are a woman going through a divorce with someone you spent a lifetime with and they want to walk away with no regards. They will learn quickly intimidation has no power with Ms. Holmes and her staff. Do yourself a favor and look no further.

Great family lawyer Thomas helped me and and my wife with a child custody battle over my 7 year old twins. He was clever and seen things I did not see and communicated his angle and approach to my case with a very difficult ex that was trying to ruin me in every possible way. Amy, his legal assistant kept me informed and calm in tough times as well as she was there for us whenever I struggled with a question or expressed a concern to her. Both Tom and Amy are a great team and we are so blessed to have found them. Long story short, we got the outcome we were asking for which was AMAZING. All we wanted was access to our kids and he got us a 50/50 split. We pray every night and include them in our prayers and express our gratitude over the settlement. We will continue to use the "Law Office of Thomas Baldwin" if ever any other family law issue comes up.

I had an issue with medications that Mike immediately recognized and had experience with. He was able to take care of my case in a diversionary manner and I was satisfied with the result considering the severe penalties I could have incurred.

It was my first time getting a DUI, pretty scary feeling a friend recommended Michael to me and it was a great decision to hire him on. He was very knowledgeable about situations like these, gave me all the information i needed to get started, especially for my restricted license. He got everything resolved in two court days and got my DUI reduced to negligent driving. I would definitely recommend Michael to others!!!!.

Even when things got a little sticky in my first time DUI case, Mike knows the right things to bring up and knows how to handle what gets thrown at him. I’m impressed by the confidence, composure and knowledgeability. He knows the right people, which is the biggest name of the game because if you don’t, you don’t have a defense. I’m thoroughly content with how he handled my case and if you are in the south sound area I would strongly advise to at least consult with the guy. At a fair price I doubt there are much better options. My only problem was lack of communication within his own office. I wasn’t able to get ahold of him as much as I would’ve liked to (since he’s busy handling business), and it seemed like one of his representatives didn’t have as much experience but Mike still handled it well.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Puyallup, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
