Suellen is a woman who fights, but always maintains her integrity. Something, lacking in family law. When my divorce started (going on a year and 8 months) I was broken. I was leaving an abusive relationship, my ex took my children and I had just quit my job. It was extremely complex and messy, but she did exactly what needed to happened including being honest with me about counseling for myself. She fought when I couldn't, but she also puts me in check in when I am being unreasonable. She doesn't play games, especially if it is a divorce with children. Suellen is like a slow drip, she just keeps going to make sure my girls and I have best and most just outcome. Ultimately, the outcome has been better than I could have imagined. She has become a friend and I recommend her whole heartedly! If you have a battle ahead, go with Suellen.

If you are reading this review, then it is my hope that you consider it closely for an accurate review of Ms. Howard's legal services. I hired Ms. Howard more than 15 years ago to be my attorney for a divorce case with child support. I did not hire somebody to listen to me whine about my case, but instead one that would handle my case ethically and professionally, and not promise me a thing but rather just do her part so the outcomes could be the best that could be expected. I retained her because she did the job and the other party in the case did not make things easy at all. I read comments in reviews here that she was rude. I believe people are mistaking candid and 'get the job done' approach as being rude, but instead she is saving her client money and time by just getting to business. I learned over the years that her services were as good as the assistance I provided in my attention to detail in the documents and items she needed to do her job. I did my best to give her what she asked and do it as quickly as I was able to provide it. If I was not wearing my "big boy pants" at anytime, she was quick to get me back on task so that I was able to do my part in it all. I was certain that my children would have the best support and payments were emphasized in court as needing to go to the care of the children, period. When the other party was not complying with court orders, Ms. Howard got things back on track for holding the other party accountable. My case went before the court many times for adjustments over the years as the children grew up and out. Ms. Howard was solid each and every time. If you want an attorney that will 'tell you like it is' and not let you 'slip into a poor me pit of misery,' contact Ms. Howard. Then, do your part in getting her what she needs and do it with more attention and speed than you expect from her. She has other clients, you have perhaps only one attorney. Give her a call. Here 15 years later, I am sure glad I did.

Gary represented our company in an issue where our ex landlord was trying to hit us with absurd damage charges on our previous building. He was very helpful and responsive. He also represented us when reviewing a purchase agreement for a commercial real estate property. He's a nice guy, he is thorough and responsive, and his fees are reasonable.

We approached one of the largest firms in the country to do our patent filing as a start-up because we did not want to waste precious time and resources on educating the attorneys on our industry or on our technology. We found the perfect match in John Tolomei and the team at Perkins Coie. After only a couple "brain dump" sessions, John was able to formulate a comprehensive outline of what our patent would look like from start to finish. As a start-up, we assumed that we were at the bottom of the food chain when it came to getting our patents filed before the U.S. patent law was switching to a "first to file" system. John was assigned to our patent filing case and truly made it his own project. He worked with us at our convenience and did not settle for "good enough". He was very open to suggestion and also great at conveying technical information in an understandable way. John was diligent about keeping us in the loop and informed about the patent process. With patents, filing is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing our relationship with John throughout the next steps.

Shaquelle was very knowledgeable, helpful, and clear about the options available to me. Although we did not have a need to move forward, if I have legal needs in the future, I'd be happy to work with her.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

  10. Are there alternative ways to resolve my legal issue?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Renton, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
