I believe there were 5 showings in court and she was late to 3 of them. Showed up twice unprepared, and tried to lie to me about it. I am not a rich man so I hired her to protect me against ridiculous terms in a parenting plan. The final straw was all paperwork was signed and she was supposed to bring it to the judge. She TEXT me to give me horrible news that it wasn't signed. When I called to discuss, her response was I'm with a client. I responded in all regular case letters and no explanation points that the next time she had a bomb to drop, make sure that she's available to discuss it with me. She used that opportunity to say that I was using a harsh tone with her and that she would talk to me when I learned how to talk to her properly. Again, this is a text message with no additions other than regular type. I still have the message saved. I firmly believe that she knew the money was running out. And instead of continuing to provide the service that was paid for, she decided this was a way to escape. I sent her an email asking her to stop all activity until we could sit down and discuss what is taking place. I also asked that all of the financials be available so that we can review. I received an email back saying that she was releasing herself from my case and I had a refund of $65. I will be talking to anyone and everyone that will listen about what a horrible experience I had with her. All around horrible experience. You get what you pay for.

I have known Kam for quite sometime and have used his professional services for our Estate Planning as well my elderly parents and my wife's mother. I have found him to be down to earth and very professional at all times. He has been most helpful for us through some very difficult times. I highly recommend Kam and his entire staff.

Kam Cayce is not only remarkably knowledgable and skilled in his field but also something more rare in the legal profession... trustworthy and honest. I have retained several lawyers from different firms over the years and have always had mixed feelings about my experiences, however Cayce & Grove is an absolute different world. Kam Cayce makes his clients his absolute first priority. I must admit, I am a bit of a demanding client, but Kam's great communication put me at ease and I always knew that everything was being taking care of. For the first time I felt like I could put my worries aside, knowing that I was being represented by not only a top-notch firm, but by people who really cared about me. I am more than happy to recommend Kam Cayce for anyones legal needs. Kam is really a breath of fresh air in the legal world.

Shaquelle was very knowledgeable, helpful, and clear about the options available to me. Although we did not have a need to move forward, if I have legal needs in the future, I'd be happy to work with her.

Christina did a superb job preparing my Transfer On Death Deed. She honored my requests or detailed how some requests would run afoul of legal scrutiny. Reasonably priced, professional and a pleasure to work with.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Renton, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
