I knew her partner, Edward, and so it was only natural that I hired Vienna to help me assist me in the sale of my house and our family business. I'm so glad I did. She is so patient and willing to work with us on every little detail. She gave us such great advice and save us so much in grief, headaches, and taxes. In the end, the transactions went smooth and we completed every thing we set out to do. Clients are well served by her representation.

I was in a bind. My dad was suffering dementia and I needed legal assistance to help take over his affairs. A friend referred me to Vienna to assist with creating a conservatorship. From the beginning, she was very compassionate and kind. She made me completely at ease and explain to me in very gentle manners all the steps I can take so that I can help become a conservator and take care of my father. Even after the case was over, she continue to make sure to follow up with me every month and checked up on me. I'm so so grateful that she was my attorney.

My mother passed away years ago. I was out of state and needed to hire an attorney to handle her estate. A friend referred me to Vienna. She handled the estate professionally, diligently, and with utmost professionalism. She was able to liquidate the house and artwork for top dollars and gave careful and prudent advice on how to save taxes on the transaction. I have since referred others to her.

As a business owner and health care provider for medically fragile children, the people that I trust to help me make decisions regarding policy and business operations can literally be life and death. Several times, we have hired Grifan to help us make these important decisions, and I trust her with the well being of not only my business, but my clients as well. Her priorities and values are well aligned with our mission of "people first" and her passion to help others drives her thorough research and consideration. The decisions we make, are not always black and white, and she is extremely thoughtful and will give information from multiple sides of an issue, allowing us to make the best decision possible. I feel 100% confident hiring Grifan for all of my needs, both professionally and personally.

I'm thoroughly impressed with Grifan Cayce as a lawyer and as a human. I've been a lawyer for over 30 years, and I am always delighted when I have a chance to refer a client to Grifan for an estate planning issue, because I know from experience the client will be incredibly well-served. Grifan is engaging and tenacious, detail oriented, and her subject matter expertise is terrific. And, for me, of tremendous importance is that Grifan has a brilliant sense of humor, coupled with true empathy - a rare combination of that whole "human" thing that is so important and so frequently kicked to the curb by lawyers. It's front and center with Grifan. So yes, of course, Grifan is MY lawyer too.

I was the victim of an auto accident a little over a year ago. I chose Paul (Bud) Houser, Jr. to represent me. I got his name from the bar association, checked his website, and did a quick internet search to check out his history. I called Bud and he immediately started documenting facts and even met me at the site of the incident to gather information. Bud not only acted as my lawyer, but after being completely disregarded by insurance companies and the involved parties, Bud was there to comfort me. I was scared and didn’t know what to do. He told me not to worry and just take care of myself. He listened to my concerns and never once made me feel like any of my questions were dumb. He never cut me off and never seemed irritated with my ramblings or opinions. He did not ask for any money up front and they completed all the paperwork at his office. It took a little over a year to settle my case (which I have come to discover is a great timeframe). He was able to convince the other side to settle for a reasonable amount out of court, sparing me further inconvenience and stress. He walked me through the process, helped me obtain medical care that was much needed, completed all the paperwork, made all communications necessary, and the thing I liked the most is he made me feel comfortable. He provided me with a check the same day it cleared at the bank and is taking care of any follow up issues directly with the insurance. Bud Houser is a great attorney. I am very pleased with his services and the amount of support I received. I would definitely recommend that anyone with a legal need seek his advice and/or services.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Renton, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
