I had evidence there was negotiation with the opposing counsel without my presence. She put minimal effort into my case. I went there because she had a fierce reputation for representing women, sadly that has been years ago and her fire has gone out. Admittedly she said, I don't manage money well so I'll just keep working. Very sad, it's all about sustaining her office, not your interests.

Hired for divorce and custody. She didn’t cross examine and failed to present evidence the clearly showed the other party was lying! She failed to present evidence including tapes of the threats and intimidation made by other party. She tried to extort money from me to return my photos! She failed to appear for the hearing and sent out nasty letters saying we didn’t show up; the court records stated she was in another court. She sent the bills to collection and they responded that she did her job so poorly she shouldn’t be paid. And I still don’t have the pictures of my son because I refused to pay her for them! I took the pictures and gave them to her for my case but she didn’t use them! And here now 30 years later I still don’t have them! She avoided legal filings that caused more litigation fees and hearings.

Feeney Law helped us advocate for our daughter when we were at complete dire straights with our school district. Since working with Kerri we have progressed by leaps and bounds. We will be forever grateful to Kerri for her support and knowledge.

Patrick is calm friendly, smart and a gentleman. He hires the same - and their firm brought excellent results. We won, and the praise the judge heaped on Patrick's colleague Russell Mikow reflects well on Patrick. What started out sad and distressing ended up like the scene "No prisoners" scene from Lawrence of Arabia where O'Toole and Sharif charge into battle. My dad would have liked these two gentlemen! Winston Churchill said "Nothing is as exhilarating as to be shot at with no results!

Patrick was wonderful to work with. He spent extra time with me getting to understand my unique circumstances (being divorced with several children) and how it would affect my will, etc. I appreciated his kind demeanor and the time he spent with me. I never felt rushed or that he was watching the clock like other attorneys that just care about getting every dime out of you. He helped me with other matters without charge because he genuinely cares about every client. Thank you Patrick and staff!

Patrick sought out my needs in helping to set up a purchase agreement for property I was purchasing from a relative. He was insightful of the sensitive issues that can arise in these situations as well as mindful of the needed details to ensure a low risk transaction for me.

I hired Deric to represent me and it was money well spent. I would recommend any person facing a criminal conviction to at least consult with Deric and see for yourself. Sadly, Deric is not the first lawyer I have had to hire over the years and I do have experience with bad ones. I can honestly say Deric was excellent at communication and I was never caught by surprise. He was easy to access which is huge, because I found myself in urgent need of his help, once or twice, and he rescued me. Thank you Deric for helping me get my life back.

Had a fairly complicated criminal defense matter. Deric was able to negotiate an agreement with the prosecution and my case was dismissed and I was able to take a breath and get back to life. Deric helped ensure a momentary lapse of judgement didn’t ruin the rest of my life. If you’ve been charged with a crime, need legal advice or are not sure what to do please call Deric. I owe him big time for the assistance he was able to give me.

After being involved in recent serious legal charges it was hard to know what to do next. It was way beyond anything I've known or dealt with & could not imagine what my choices & chances were in defending myself. After learning more, I called Johnson & Orr for help - mostly because they were close. They called back right away & set-up a meeting where they shared their clear experience on such cases & treated me positively as a partner in resolving my legal issues. By partner I mean they were always clear & honest with me about the process, with just the right/helpful communication through email. For what it's worth, Deric Orr was very successful with my case & I'd highly recommend his efforts on any legal needs you may have. Plus their one-time-fee seems to cover an awesome commitment for them to bring the case to resolution.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richland, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
