Alan was a great asset in our complicated divorce that involved a complex financial settlement, custody issues, and numerous attempts to escalate the situation from the opposing side. He gave me great advice from the initial discussion to the trial, he did a great job at preparation for the trial and he was excellent at presenting our case to the judge to ensure a good outcome. Alan also helped tremendously in efforts to avoid escalation and when the escalation was necessary, he did a great job at finding the right approach to achieve a good outcome. Alan and his assistant were always prompt to respond and tackle the issues at hand. Alan worked with me closely to make our case, and choose a realistic course of action to deal with the most important challenges and to avoid wasting time and resources on things that did not really matter. Alan had great insights into every aspect of the divorce from financial issues to custody. He gave me advice on preparing the numerous documents, oftentimes avoiding additional costs. He was invaluable in protecting our child during and after the divorce. Alan understood the way the courts work and helped to ensure that the proposed settlement and parenting plan will be accepted by the judge, which is exactly what happened. In summary, I was greatly impressed by Alan’s level of professionalism and ethics, and if you are looking for an attorney who will get the job done and get it done efficiently and well, I strongly recommend his services.

Alan is an excellent litigator. Responsive, reasonable, knowledgeable and prepared. There are no guarantees in litigation, so many variables. Your best guarantee is a competent lawyer. Mr. Funk is exceptionally competent and is very efficient with his time. He knows his audience well and delivers his cases in a way judicial officers appreciate. Alan is a tough opponent. Retaining Alan is a decision you will not regret. Alan’s staff is excellent, you will never feel like your case is less than top priority for his team. Highly recommend team Funk! You will not be disappointed.

I want to thank both of you for the work you did for my nephew. My nephew had worked with several attorneys related to his divorce and child custody and the relationship he has had with you has been by far the best fit and the most beneficial. You had the patience and commitment to hang in there with him to implement a legal strategy that was he was unsure of, but ended up working. I know my nephew is grateful for what you did for him. He also learned a lot in the process about working with others. Having a good outcome at trial and more time with his son removed a huge stress and has allowed my nephew to put more time into not only his parenting, but also his work for the school district and his small business. All that seems to be going well. Having more time with his son has not only been wonderful for my nephew, but also for the rest of his family. It was a great outcome for everyone and wouldn’t have been possible without your work.

Prior to trial Alan was very good with advice. At trial he was excellent with preparation and presentation. The outcome was as good as it possibly could have been. Despite a bad GAL report, the judge did everything I wanted and said the GAL was "biased" against me and the report "unhelpful"

Alan handled a very complicated and contentious divorce for me. There was mental illness involved on the opposing side as well as a gamut of unseemly and aggressive behavior from both the opposing council and the opposing party. Alan never lost his cool when dealing with this complex situation. It was a complex people situation as well and he handled this wonderfully and quite skillfully. He knew when to push, when to back off, and how to phrase communications so that they have the intended affect. He also naturally kept the facts and possibilities of the case front and center and separated the often-emotional response from what was legally and realistically the best course of action. Furthermore, he was able to explain all of this in layman's terms. Alan truly advised me: he took my ideas and worked with me to turn them into a solid legal plan of attack. I was able to own the process and I learned how to handle my communications with the other party by following his guidance during the divorce. I ended up writing a lot of the documents with his help which saved attorney's fees and allowed me to convey what I felt needed to be said. He was involved as needed at every step of the process and he always answered all of my questions and worked with me on finalizing the documents before they were submitted. Alan truly cared about my situation, worked tirelessly to get me the best outcome possible, and was ethical in his dealings with me and with the other party. I have nothing but good things to say about how he and his office handled the case.

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. His clear communication and willingness to listen made me feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in his expertise. Matthew's thoughtfulness and understanding were evident throughout our interactions. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
