I retained Jennifer Miller to represent me in a civil suit, and am so glad I did. Throughout a year long, very frustrating and extremely traumatic process, Ms. Miller was the light at the end of every tunnel; Jennifer is honest, transparent, and realistic but also extremely compassionate and genuine. Ms. Miller and her team at Miller Law Group worked with my co defendant and I at every turn to ensure we were represented at the very highest level, they were extremely well prepared, and Jennifer can see right through the BS and has the ability and experience to shut it down. Thank you to the entire team for representing us so well, thank you for your kindness, and thank you for seeing us through to the end. Thank you for being real people and meeting us where we were, thank you for defending our reputations. Thank you.

I was in a truly hopeless situation before I was referred to Ms. Miller by a coworker. My daughter was in a terrible, volatile environment with a mentally unstable mother who was failing to perform basic motherly duties. I felt powerless to the situation. Jennifer was immediately encouraging from our first phone call, and jumped on getting the necessary papers filed for emergency custody. She worked with me and my family to get my daughter permanently out of the situation and living with me. She was able to articulate the situation to the judge perfectly, as well as work with the judge to formulate a parenting plan that includes not only protections for my daughters wellbeing as she grows and is allowed more time with her mother, but also allows me, as the custodial parent, to monitor her mothers mental state. The plan requires regular updates to the court and to me about her mental health treatment, and protects my daughter if things take a bad turn in that regard. My daughter is thriving and happy today with a healthy routine, and none of this would’ve been possible without Jennifer’s extensive knowledge of the WA State legal system. I always felt like I was being taken care of with Ms. Miller. She is a powerful force for justice and was excellent at explaining the process as time went on. She kept me updated throughout, but did a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes filing papers and drafting documents for the case. She always made herself available if I had questions about the case, and gave me great advice on how to address certain situations with my daughter’s mother as they presented themselves. I will forever be grateful to Jennifer for everything she’s done for me and my little girl. Her can-do attitude is infectious, and her vast knowledge of the legal system put me at ease during the most difficult time in my life.

I am grateful for working with Jennifer on my court cases. I had no prior experience being in my situation (falsely accused of domestic violence and endangering my children), and I was clueless on what to do. Jennifer walked me through the journey, the length of time and documentation I should gather. The process did indeed take a long time, and we did so during COVID’s pandemic. She represented me building up my criminal defense case, and resulted in the DA offering a reasonable plea. I chose to plead “No Contest” to avoid a lengthy and dramatic trial. In my case, I felt all we had was my story and their story. She represented me in my civil case against my wrongful accusation, and we proved to the judge that the other party was at fault. Jennifer negotiated with the other party so that I could have primary custody of my kids. It took over 11 months before I could have my children again, but we remained steady and determined. I would highly recommend working with Jennifer to anyone wanting honest and fair representation on their side.

Having endured the most difficult two years of my life, and as I slowly emerge to normalcy, I am grateful I chose to have Jennifer in my corner. She made sense of an absurdly complicated and bizarre set of allegations that put me in the “Kafka trap” – and from day one assured me “we'll get through this. Trust me.” I did and she was right. She also masterfully picked apart ambiguous elements of the opposing council, as well as a dethroned/terminated key player in the process whom reared their head in the trial. Highly recommended.

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. He guided me through each step of the process, ensuring that I understood all aspects of my living will and addressing any concerns or questions I had along the way. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
