Two years ago I was recommended the team of Steven Shaw for guidance on two accidents from careless drivers! The combination of Steven and Debby represent over 20 years experience in dealing with creepy insurance companies that “never” have your best interest in mind!

I have nothing but absolute praise and adoration for this company, Steve and Debby particularly. I was in a car accident in 2020 that left me with permanent injuries and a totaled car and Steve and Debby were my team from day one. They took care of everything and really let me focus on healing and managing my life instead of panicking about how to handle this new situation. They treated me with respect, kindness and worked their butts off for me and I will never have enough kind words to say or recommendations to give. I’m blown away by their professionalism and ability to walk me through these complicated matters.

This is not by any means an outlet to trash the previous service i received from Steve's practice. Steve is a great guy when it's convenient for him to be. He took a very old case that was long overdue for settlement. I appreciated this. He was able to call in an arbitrator, and the arbitrator pretty much did the I between work to get me a fair payout to something that was agreeable and suitable for both parties, Steve assured that my best interest would be kept in mind and he did not disappoint in his services for that case. Unfortunately, during my time with Steve, and now a whole year and a 1/2 later. I'm still getting bills that the settlement was supposed to cover. There was a portion of my settlement that was supposed to be allocated towards medical bill coverage. Steve did not allocate those funds properly, I'm assuming, so now, i'm still getting hit on my credit report for these medical bills and accounts being delinquent accounts from the xray company that I used at the hospital after the accident. He assured me that these collections would be taken care of, but now he's dodging my phone calls when I try to notify him of this still happening. As of 2023, I had another injury that I wanted to have his expertise knowledge on, but he would look into it since he did not specialize in the specific circumstance of the injury. He would reach out to one of his colleagues in the industry for more information. I touched base again with him on this topic, and he stated that I do have a case, and once i'm finished with treatment, he would represent me, but he's just dodging my phone calls now. It was rather strange because Steve was once a very responsive and attentive lawyer. I guess this was because he was invested in my previous case and actually representing me and being paid to do so. I just don't understand why businesses do this. If you don't want to work with someone, just say that so they can move forward. Don't lead me into believing that you're going to help me with something when you're not or something came up so you no longer can represent me, I take brutal honesty over someone.Dodging my phone calls and leaving me without any support or suggestions. He told me to call him when I was done with treatment so I began doing so last year '23, but he has yet to return any of my phone calls or voice messages that i've left for him regarding my injury and treatment concluding. Steve knows about all the unfortunate things that has happened in my life within the last couple of years, so I don't know why he would think it's okay to lead me into believing that he was willing to represent me on yet another case. At first, I was extremely concerned about his well-being, but now I certainly know my phone calls are being dodged because I happened to be by his office and seen he was there. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but it's starting to just feel mean and unprofessional. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Replying to response*** Steve, you know exactly who I am. You replied to my review as if you don't, but it's not hard to match my photo with our previous emails. Let's be real. Maybe you were busy or had personal issues, but a simple "I can't help you right now. You should reach out to another legal representative or firm" would have been polite. We used to have a great rapport, but now you're ignoring my calls and emails and pretending not to know me? This just confirms your mean and unprofessional intentions.

Debby on the team is great at discovering ways to make clients' cases stronger and make sure they get fair compensation for their claims. I've seen her bring peace to stressful and complicated cases. She'll give you great advice and make sure your claim is the right fit. If you're overwhelmed and don't know what to do, call Shaw Legal Solutions and call Debby!

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. He guided me through each step of the process, ensuring that I understood all aspects of my living will and addressing any concerns or questions I had along the way. His clear communication and willingness to listen made me feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in his expertise. Matthew's thoughtfulness and understanding were evident throughout our interactions. He took the time to truly understand my wishes and priorities, tailoring the living will to suit my specific needs and circumstances. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
