Pros
1
Experienced and knowledgeable attorney with a strong understanding of the legal system and community
“Mimi has been a lawyer for awhile and knows the ins and outs. She is also close to the community as I recognized she knew some of the others in the court like the PD and the city judge.”
2
Personable and provides good advice to keep clients at ease
“What stood out to me was she was very personable and gave very good advise to keep me at ease following the case.”
3
Effective at negotiating and reaching favorable settlements
“Mimi managed to help keep the cooperation on track during mediation, dispite the opposing lawyer attempting to force the case to an expensive trial”
4
Highly responsive and communicative, keeping clients well-informed
“Mimi was excellent to work with over email, kept me up to date and was highly responsive to all inquiries. I felt like I was a top priority for her and that she cared about the case.”
5
Passionate about her work and a strong advocate for her clients
“Her passion for her job is contagious, and she was a terrific role model for me throughout the divorce process.”
Cons
1
Can sometimes seem disconnected or forgetful about details of the client's case
“Every time we met, she acted like we had never met. "Are you the one who has the fireman husband?" No.”
2
May not adequately prepare or inform clients about the legal process and next steps
“She did nothing to tell me of the divorce process from a legal point. A bit of a overview of things to come - i.e. the discovery process, court, etc. I needed a lawyer who would reassure me and prepare me for what was to come.”
3
Oversight in ensuring all necessary legal matters are addressed, such as removing a client's name from a joint loan
“The biggest problem with Mimi is she forgot to make my ex take my name off the home loan. So, whereas he has the home and the debt, my name is still on the loan with no provision on a time frame in which he has to remove my name.”

I feel extremely fortunate to have worked with Mark Alexander over the very long haul of my case. I was somehow able to hire the attorney everyone hopes to get but seldom does. Thanks to Mark, I was able to achieve a much better outcome than I ever hoped for. He was over-and-above in every way that matters: expertise, timeliness, punctuality, turnaround, patience and pragmatism to name just a few. His work showed so much thought and attention to detail which really won me over. My divorce was a painful time in my life and I'm deeply grateful to have found Mark get me through the legal journey safely with a secure future intact.

Nathan Cliber was great to work with putting together a pre-nuptial agreement. He was patient in explaining the law and options, provided great advice and guidance in how to approach it, and iterated quickly. He was upfront about costs, possible outcomes, and timelines. I'd happily work with him again (although hope to never need too)

Words cannot adequately express how fortunate I feel to have found Nathan Cliber to handle my case. Not only was he an absolute pleasure to work with, but he was always upfront and direct about our chances of success and made sure I knew exactly what I was getting into if I wished to pursue certain actions. He was considerate of my time (money), keeping me on track and focused when he could have chosen to sit back and let me ramble while he collected $100s. He approached sensitive topics with empathy and understanding. He somehow always knew when I needed gentle guidance and when I needed a firm reality check (which he did with professionalism and respect). Not only did I feel like he truly cared about me, my case, and my family, but I was confident he was giving me the best chances he possibly could. Nathan had my back every step of the way. If that wasn't enough, he was also so personable that talking to him felt like talking with a good friend I'd known for years. As I write this, we have made it through the largest hurdles and will be mostly parting ways. As relieved as I am to have these battles almost over, I am also very sad that our time together is ending. I'll miss working with him, but it should go without saying that he will be the first I contact if I need legal assistance again. If you're looking, this is your guy. I couldn't have chosen better.

I was along for solidarity and support during a family members' divorce; I cannot recommend Janel highly enough. She is an EXCELLENT communicator. If she posted a masterclass, I'd sign up lol! She was so adept at diffusing potentially fraught dynamics and situations. There were any number of things that could have blown up into more billable hours for her and emotional stress for us - she just glided right through, making everyone on all sides feel calm and covered. She charged a flat rate, and was able to deliver within it, which we really appreciated. While you technically *can* DIY this paperwork - there were legal phrasing and details to the process that would have overwhelmed us, and we found her price extremely fair for the amount of personalized service that she put in to my family's situation. This was the absolute best decision. 10/10, would divorce with Janel again : )

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. He guided me through each step of the process, ensuring that I understood all aspects of my living will and addressing any concerns or questions I had along the way. His clear communication and willingness to listen made me feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in his expertise. Matthew's thoughtfulness and understanding were evident throughout our interactions. He took the time to truly understand my wishes and priorities, tailoring the living will to suit my specific needs and circumstances. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
