Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and professional legal representation
“Very knowledgeable and professional. The communication was always open with the Assistant and she was welcoming.”
2
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Scott was always very aware of my concerns about costs, and he did initially give a very accurate prediction of final cost. In addition, he was always calm, polite, thoughtful, and empathetic with me.”
3
Successful case outcomes and charge reductions
“The charge was lowered to wreckless driving and 2 other charges were dropped. Thank you Scott for all you did!”
4
Personalized and compassionate service
“Scott has been a great listener, compassionate, and I have always believed he was fighting for me and the best interest of my children.”
5
Willingness to take on complex and unique cases
“We as well as our daughter's therapist knew this was not right, so we started to fight the system. Since we were not technically the boys parents, it was a much bigger fight than anticipated. We contacted many attorney's and finally met with only a few. When we left Scott's office, we knew this was not his typical kind of cases, but we felt very confident that he was the person we trusted to help restore our family!”

18 months after my divorce was settled, I was laid off. When I found work again, I took a significant pay cut, making it impossible to pay my original maintenance amount. Then my ex petitioned to relocate cross-country with our kids, while demanding I continue to pay well more than I could now afford. I consulted multiple lawyers, expressing my desire to oppose the relocation and request a decrease in support payment. Several said no immediately, one felt it would be an “easy win,” and one charged a fee just to meet with their “intake specialist.” In contrast, Scott was patient, empathetic, and balanced. He gave me a very candid and practical assessment of my situation, and his opinion on my chances to win. After we mutually agreed to go forward, he was responsive, made himself available even when my schedule wasn’t convenient, and was very collaborative. When mediation failed, he demonstrated his intellect and deep knowledge of the law in court. My ex’s lawyer focused his efforts on attacking my character. We could have done the same, but Scott insisted we take the high-road instead. That, combined with the case law he cited, his handling of witnesses (mine and hers), and his sincere and respectful demeanor led the court to side in my favor on each motion, as well as their subsequent motions for reconsideration. I consider myself lucky to have found Scott. I hope I never have to go through this again, but if I do, it will be with him.

My ex-wife filed for divorce a year ago and her lawyer filed a restraining order against me immediately before a visit to see my son, despite the fact I did not reside in the state, and having no specific previous conflict that merited such an action. I had a free consultation with Scott who was very good at listening and sympathetic, and I decided to retain his services. He acted quickly to negotiate the withdrawal of the petition for a restraining order. Subsequently, a fair parenting plan was negotiated, which allowed me to see my son and contact him regularly while out of state, which was much better than the situation prior to my ex-wife filing for divorce, which depended on her whims. Child support was a concern, as my wife wanted an unreasonable amount of money, far beyond what I could afford. Scott was right in his interpretation of the facts and when he went to court the Commissioner favored his arguments, and the terms settled were fair. He was right on and did not waiver, which reflects his knowledge and many years of experience. Scott was always very aware of my concerns about costs, and he did initially give a very accurate prediction of final cost. In addition, he was always calm, polite, thoughtful, and empathetic with me, he built a rapport with my ex-wife's lawyer to negotiate, while being resolute in defending my interests. Getting divorced with Scott's representation was far less stressful than it might have been with another attorney.

I called Scott when I first realized I was going to be going through divorce. As someone who has never been involved in anything to do with going to court or trial, I have to say that Scott made it very easy for me, also I was not the best client as far as providing paperwork and things of that nature but he was always patient and helpful. Scott also advised and me and handled my entire case for over 10 months. I ended up going to trial where he was well prepared and laid out my case quickly and efficiently. Every aspect of the case was ruled in my favor, Also I'm able to see my son who I was in a ruthless custody battle for even more often! I highly recommend him as an attorney, the amount of stress relief is worth it!

I retained Scott Semrau as my attorney to help with me deal with a recent family law situation involving a false allegation of domestic violence restraining order against me which was later dismissed in court thanks to the excellent legal work of Scott Semrau. In addition to the dismissal of the false restraining order against me, Scott Semrau also helped me safeguard my legal rights to be a parent and not be alienated from my children by helping set up regular court ordered time with my children and a reasonable child support order. Scott Semrau's legal strategies in court worked very well in all of my court proceedings and I can attest that we have won all of our court hearings and I have attained my my desired legal outcome. One of the most important legal victory in court Scott Semrau has attained for me is the dismissal of a false restraining order against me which could have led me to lose my job and adversely affect my future employment. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

We found Scott one day before we had to be in court to litigate a restraining order. Scott was immediately on the ball and went to great lengths to prepare us for our hearing and also to make us feel respected, heard, and understood. As the case developed further through continuance and back and forth with the respondent’s lawyer, Scott displayed unwavering dedication to ensuring our case was ironclad. He was up front and honest about what things would cost and which approaches he thought would be worth the expense, and which of my suggestions probably wouldn’t be worth it. Throughout our ordeal, Scott was supportive, collaborative, and compassionate; and when it came time to finally go to court against the respondent, Scott was masterful. His opening argument, witness examination and cross examination, and closing argument were fantastic, and his excellent representation of us resulted in the most positive outcome we could have imagined. I literally cannot recommend Scott highly enough.

Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
