I interviewed three lawyers before choosing Laura. I made the right choice. She and her paralegal Marcie always made me feel like my case was important. Laura is compassionate and really cares about her clients. She listens to their concerns and is a tough advocate when necessary. She made one of the most difficult times of my life manageable. I can't say enough good things about her.

I hired Laura to work collaboratively with me, my ex-husband and his (also collaboratively trained) lawyer. Both my ex and I are so pleased we did. Ours was a bit of an unusual case in that we wanted to divorce but also continue to own and operate two businesses together as well as to keep extended family relationships active. Laura listened closely to what I wanted to achieve individually and together with my ex. She was organized, efficient, respectful, kind, dependable, responsive, open-minded and is quite obviously well versed in her knowledge of divorce law. She was patient with my ever-present questions, providing clear answers on the spot or soon afterwards. She never left me or us wondering what the next step was. She kept us all on track as well as provided excellent references for outside consultants as needed. We ended up meeting all our stated high-end goals, both faster and less expensively than we had expected. I highly recommend Laura. She provides extraordinary value.

I learned of Laura by referral from a local mediator. In 2016 I began working with Laura to initiate my divorce and reached successful settlement in September 2017. Initially I thought I could fill out the court forms independently, but soon realized there were far too many questions for me to answer on my own. At that time, I chose to hire Laura with unbundled services, where I took the lead on filings and meeting my own deadlines. Laura did a fantastic job asking the right questions (at the right time) to understand my case situation. From there, she provided me the correct forms to draft on my own, listed the supporting documents I needed to obtain, and helped me take the practical steps toward a temporary living situation. I was able to save a lot of money by gathering my own supporting documents and draft the court forms. She suggested helpful/necessary changes to my work, kept me organized, identified all the required steps, and provided helpful reminders. Afterward, Laura and I have kept in touch regularly over the last 6 years as she answers questions I have from time to time. In 2021 I hired Laura again, but with full representation since I was busier at that time. Laura took the lead in my case and carried a lot of the work which I am very appreciative for. We worked together easily and successfully, reaching an agreed settlement in January 2022. I am very pleased with the outcome for everyone involved. My sense is that everyone enjoyed working with Laura, not just me, but officers of the Court and opposing counsel! Like so many people, I work hard for my money and care about my family so I want to hire only those who I can trust, and Laura is certainly one of the people I trust most. Laura is even-keeled, organized, and flexible - but also has firm boundaries, decades of legal experience along with a great sense of humor. I wish Laura and her clients all the best.

I hired Laura to provide unbundled services because my ex-husband and I were using a mediator without counsel in the room. While a divorce is devastating, if you have to get divorced having Laura counsel you is a great decision. She was responsive, with a few exceptions when she was busy with a court case, and she made sure I was getting a fair share of the assets and spousal maintenance without being unfair to the other person.

What do you need in a divorce attorney? That certainly depends on your intended outcome, but in my case, I found in Laura Sutkus someone that shared and supported my human values (fair, respectful and honorable) and idea of how to end a 20-year marriage with kids. Although my divorce was nothing as I had hoped – a swift and cooperative ending to our marriage – instead I faced a long, cruel and dishonest divorce process that almost ended in a trial. Laura agreed to represent me, even after learning who my wife’s lawyer was (four others turned me down). Always to-the-point, practical in her approach, and efficient in her decisions, we stuck together for almost two long years, working through exaggerated and inaccurate (lies) claims, and confounded stories and representations of my kids and their health . She showed me how to be balanced and pragmatic in my decision making and reaction to the ‘crazy’. My divorce was not at all what I expected or could have imagined, but Sutkus Law kept me moving forward and ensured that, in the end, I settled/mediated in a position that was comfortable and right for me. As I reflect on my almost two-year process, I recall some traits of her that are easily overlooked during such an emotional period – attentive and able to recall every detail, understands family law inside and out, and maintains a strength and respectfulness even through the nastiness. When needed, she has excellent resources to restore or redirect an issue (i.e., QDROs and State PERS, fair sharing of child expenses). Thank you for maintaining my/our respectful approach through this difficult period.

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. He guided me through each step of the process, ensuring that I understood all aspects of my living will and addressing any concerns or questions I had along the way. His clear communication and willingness to listen made me feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in his expertise. Matthew's thoughtfulness and understanding were evident throughout our interactions. He took the time to truly understand my wishes and priorities, tailoring the living will to suit my specific needs and circumstances. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
