Highly professional and competent attorney who listens attentively, provides expert guidance, and works diligently to achieve the best possible outcome for the client
“From the outset, I knew I was in good hands. During the consultation, he was very professional, he was a great and active listener. He paid close attention to my emotion and narrative and I could tell right away, he would have my best interest and the best interest of my family in mind.”
2
Responsive and transparent communication, keeping the client informed throughout the process
“He explained everything that I did not understand, responded promptly to my calls or e-mails, included me in the decision making process, and always listened.”
3
Compassionate and understanding approach, providing emotional support during a difficult time
“Dave led me through all the bumps and issues we encountered with professionalism and compassion; and I might add, a ton of patience.”
4
Efficient and cost-effective representation, avoiding unnecessary expenses for the client

5
Highly recommended by clients, with a track record of positive results
“I would, without hesitation, recommend the Tsai Law Company, and especially Dave Kitchell, to anyone who needs an attorney for a divorce.”
Cons
1
Lack of engagement and effort in some cases, failing to utilize available evidence and strategies
“The representation was absent and lazy until there was easy money for him to make. Refused to use evidence, exhibits and witnesses that could have and should have slammed shut my case on an abusive and Narcissistic ex-wife.”
2
Potential for inconsistent performance, with some clients reporting a positive experience while others were dissatisfied
“David was a great lawyer and I have and will continue to recommend him to others. ... Another friend of mine, a criminal attorney, is always being asked for recommendations, so I gave him Dave's card. I absolutely recommend Dave Kitchell and TSAI Law Company (but mostly Dave)." and "I hired Dave. The representation was absent and lazy until there was easy money for him to make.”

I hired Dave. The representation was absent and lazy until there was easy money for him to make. Refused to use evidence, exhibits and witnesses that could have and should have slammed shut my case on an abusive and Narcissistic ex-wife. He talks a big game yet doesn't use the tools or evidence at his disposal to hammer it in.

David Kitchell was retained several years ago for a complex relocation case that spanned a lot of court activity, depositions, mediation, and arbitration sessions. David was prompt in his communication, did absolutely everything I expected and hoped for, and the outcome was in my favor. He is highly experienced and professionally firm in upholding our position. He has done an absolutely fantastic job at representing my point of view and that of my family. This case had a lot of curveballs but none posed a problem for David. It was bitter-sweet asking Mr. Kitchell to withdraw as it has been a pleasure working with him (And his paralegal, Kim). Kim is an amazing paralegal that kept me up to date on everything, was prompt in getting things filed, copies issued, and when David was out for trials or otherwise unavailable, coordinated with partners to get prompt responses. Not only do I highly recommend David, I have already referred a couple friends his way with custody matters. My only regret is that I hadn't hired him sooner, and instead went through several "high power" firms before landing on David.

I interviewed many lawyers before finding Dave. I was seeking an intelligent and experienced lawyer to help me with my divorce of a 28 year marriage. During the first free consultation with Dave he listened to the details of my situation and then we had an in depth dialog about the process, specific ideas, strategies and possible outcomes. Rather than providing generic responses Dave was engaged and demonstrated a much higher level of understanding and expertise to my specific complex situation. After hiring Dave I continued to be very impressed with his thoughtful and skilled approach which helped me maintain a level of hope through this difficult process. Dave was very responsive and I always felt he was working in my best interest. Dave was extremely skilled at negotiating a final out of court settlement and I believe he was able to achieve the best possible outcome. I highly recommend David Kitchell.

I have tried two different lawyers for my divorce case before, they quickly helped me formulate my opinion that lawyers are not only a waste but also out there to scam my money. However, that perception has changed since my mom found David. David is very professional, personable and sharp, he helped me to negotiate with my ex when I felt we are going to court for sure. It came out to be the most cost effective option for me and I am glad I hired David. He also strike me as the person who doesn't want to take advantage of me but think of my interest first. He indeed protected me for the whole case, and It was also very pleasurable to work with both David and Kim (his assistant). He is really friendly as well and indeed my guardian angel in my divorce case and I highly recommend him to any man who needs help in similar situations.

I had a very smooth and pleasant experience working with David and his paralegal Kim Lovstrom. When one is going through a difficult situation, in my case a divorce, it's extremely challenging separating the emotional from the objective. Right from the beginning, David tried to simply a situation which was extremely nerve racking for me. He was careful with looking out for me and what would be best financially as well as the easiest way of getting out of the relationship, yet he was there, if the situation were to get ugly. I was dealing with a husband (now ex, thanks to David and Kim), who is a narcissist and having a competent attorney on my side was very important to me. I would highly recommend David and Kim - thank you both for helping me through an uneasy and difficult phase in my life!

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. He guided me through each step of the process, ensuring that I understood all aspects of my living will and addressing any concerns or questions I had along the way. His clear communication and willingness to listen made me feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in his expertise. Matthew's thoughtfulness and understanding were evident throughout our interactions. He took the time to truly understand my wishes and priorities, tailoring the living will to suit my specific needs and circumstances. His compassionate approach made a potentially daunting task feel manageable, and I appreciated his genuine care for my well-being and that of my loved ones. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
