Pros
1
Experienced and knowledgeable in various areas of law, including divorce, personal injury, and family law matters
“Steve's experience here was invaluable, as he presented an option to me that I otherwise would not have been aware of or considered (legal separation rather than traditional divorce), that addressed the complex situation we were dealing with, while still meeting both parties' needs.”
2
Provides clear communication and keeps clients well-informed throughout the legal process
“Steve was great about communication, often leaving me a detailed voicemail as well as an email. This was especially helpful when I was busy at work and needed a quick update.”
3
Offers personalized attention and tailors his approach to each client's specific needs and goals
“He honestly made a very painful situation quite simple and easy to deal with. And in the end he actually came in under budget, saving me a bit over his initial estimate.”
4
Demonstrates a compassionate and understanding demeanor, especially in emotionally-charged situations
“Steve was a calming presence, and was careful to explain the litigation in terms I understood.”
5
Achieves favorable outcomes for clients, even in complex or challenging cases
“Instead of losing custody, I ended up gaining primary custody of my oldest daughter - the one worst abused by her mother. There is no way I could have achieved this on my own. Steve's work got the best possible outcome for my children given the court system and circumstances.”

Hemmat Law Group dove into an existing Probate and helped bring it to completion with my total satisfaction. I worked specifically with Katie Olson and can’t say enough about how well she listened and understood my unique issues that were pending. Katie provided clear communication to myself, the team, and opposing counsel. John Socha also provided quick and gentle responses to my initial call and all inquiries thereafter. Steve Hemmat is simply a terrific Attorney and has surrounded himself with a more than qualified team that puts the clients needs first. Thank you!

I worked with with Mr. Hemmat and his team (his associates Anna Linden & Yina Finch are amazing!). They held my hand through an extremely stressful time in my life. After some bad experiences with prior attorneys, I had lost hope of ever finding a legal team that met my needs. But Steve and his team really care about the wellbeing of their clients, and the outcome of their cases. Highly recommend looking for a legal team that cares.

The emotional process of writing a protective order became overwhelming for us, and since we had a positive experience with Hemmat Law Group in the past, we reached out again for their guidance. Yina and Andrew listened to our concerns and provided realistic options for us moving forward. We appreciated their sensitivity to our situation and their expertise and knowledge of the law. As we moved forward with our protection order, there were technical complications with the county clerk's online submission system, and Katie worked diligently on a work around for these technical issues. It was a relief knowing someone was looking out for us in getting the necessary documents to the court. During the hearings, Andrew and Yina were professional and prepared. We were kept in the loop and felt supported throughout the entire process, and there were never any questions about what was going to happen next. After each hearing, there were reassuring debriefings, which helped to ease our minds about next steps moving forward. Their combined efforts proved fruitful, and we are grateful to Yina, Katie, and Andrew for their professionalism, efficiency, and helping to ease our minds during an emotional time in our lives.

I recently had the privilege of working with Matthew Cunanan to draft my living will, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of excellent. From start to finish, Matthew demonstrated unparalleled professionalism, efficiency, and empathy, making the entire process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities of Matthew's service was his remarkable ease to work with. He guided me through each step of the process, ensuring that I understood all aspects of my living will and addressing any concerns or questions I had along the way. His clear communication and willingness to listen made me feel heard and understood, fostering a sense of trust and confidence in his expertise. Matthew's thoughtfulness and understanding were evident throughout our interactions. He took the time to truly understand my wishes and priorities, tailoring the living will to suit my specific needs and circumstances. His compassionate approach made a potentially daunting task feel manageable, and I appreciated his genuine care for my well-being and that of my loved ones. Thanks to Matthew's expertise and dedication, I now have peace of mind knowing that I have a comprehensive living will in place to protect my sons in the event of unforeseen circumstances. His attention to detail and commitment to ensuring thorough documentation instilled in me a sense of security, knowing that my wishes will be carried out as intended. I wholeheartedly recommend Matthew Cunanan to anyone in need of living will services. His professionalism, efficiency, and compassionate approach make him a standout choice in this field. Sarah has taken us from incorporation through investment trademarking and every other thing that has come up. She is smart, fast, responsive and has the answers you need. She is also ably assisted which is really important when it comes to saving money and getting great service. She only gets involved when real legal decision making is required, otherwise everything runs smoothly under her review. Working under the auspice of Davis Wright Tremain (DWT.COM) means you have instant credibility with investors because you are working with a blue chip firm and you have access to specialist resources (IP etc) whenever you may need them. I originally looked at the least expensive way to get legal help and after some research happily discovered that this was it.

Sarah is a solid asset to any deal team doing work domestically or internationally. As outside counsel for a fast growing company, Sarah was the primary point person for multiple strategic transactions including: fundraising, cross-border M&A, sensitive regulatory dealings, and managing through constantly changing corporate/market demands. I've worked with Sarah multiple times over a 4-5 year period and I look forward to our next engagement.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Seattle, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
