I was a trial lawyer for 30 years but never thought I would need one myself, until I was injured in a dog attack. After careful research I retained Bill Broughton to represent me. He and his legal assistant Kelly were terrific, and they procured a settlement well beyond what I thought was possible. Bill was diligent, tenacious, caring, and thoroughly professional, and the deft touch with which he negotiated with the insurance adjustor was a thing of beauty. He and Kelly are consummate professionals and kind, decent people. Highest possible recommendation.

As a business owner, consumer, politically and socially independent and non-partisan activist, I have hired many attorneys over a period of 50 years. I have sued but never been sued, and I have avoided many situations that could end in legal trouble, such as estate issues, divorce, guardianship, contracts, real estate, by being careful about the law and lawyers. Most lawyers stink, but I hold my nose and consult with them because seemingly everything has connections to law in one way or another. Here is my take on 50 years of damned lawyers: 1. 20% of attorneys are excellent, but most range from mediocre to bad. Most are not good case managers because they are detail-constipated; they pick through the legal wording and have chronic and serious trouble seeing the forest for the trees. One real estate attorney I hired spent months exchanging letters with another attorney, picking endlessly over every letter of every word, and at $500 per letter. 2. Most attorneys slip easily into being rude, contentious, domineering and abrupt, and not infrequently abusive outright. They don't teach respect or courtesy in law school, and the field attracts many bullies, greedy, ill-mannered and argumentative misfits. Unless your case has a fat pay-day for them, like big accident/injury cases, your business won't motivate them to treat you even 1/10 as well as you are treated at a reputable retailer. 3. Law school costs a fortune so, even if they wanted to, they have to charge a lot of money. This is why only the well off can afford lawyers and pursue their interests. Aa for life for the majority, you are well advised to always carry a jar of K-Y, stay out of the big city, and stay home after dark. 4. Most lawyers are cynical and, behind your back or in your face, sneer, discount, or dismiss outright the average person's sense of fair play, integrity or justice. 3. Many lawyers are ignorant. The usual case is like this: Well, Mr. Smith, I will have to research this issue and it will take X-hours. Have another question for your lawyer and that means more hours on your bill. This is usually the case even when they specialize in the area of law your want guidance on. Imagine you go to a car mechanic and he says, well, I will have to study the problem, at $350 an hour for a number of hours--and then decide on a course of action to repair your car. An attorney who claimed to be a HOA expert, a Phil Havers of Silverdale, charged me hundreds of dollars to research whether it was legal for equal members of an HOA to pay different dues. Well, it was right there in the law, plain as day according to another attorney. Havers never did figure it out. 4. Many lawyers are foggy headed drunks who love drinking their lunches. In a law magazine I read, 18% of attorneys admitted to drinking too much. That is triple the rate in the general population. 5. Some attorneys are crooks. When my brother died, his attorney churned and milked his account for YEARS. He knew one of my brother's wills was not legal because it was not witnessed, but he went on robbing from it. His name was Bruce Gardiner of Kirkland. When we got on Bruce, he actually hired another crooked attorney to help him, an Eric Jeppesen of Bellevue. In conclusion, I found this law firm to be the just more of the same rude, money-wasting, and ill-informed. I found its snooty representative to be as "pleasant" to talk with as I would some guy laying on a sidewalk in Seattle. Trust me, you can do better, although better as a rule means going to the high quality guys in the high-rises in Seattle.

Constantly forgets to send you paperwork, puts you behind on all proceedings. He always said "My paralegal never sent that to you?" when asked and than would get the documents 2-3 days later still. He was always on "travel", hard to reach. Simply by the book and willing to give as much to the other person and will do bare bones to support you. Overall wish I would of hired one that actually cared and would inform me of things. I had to wait 30 days to even get paperwork that the court case was done and that is cause I asked for them. I was never going to be told or sent any documents on it otherwise. EDIT: Before he comments. Please take note. I am not the first person to complain about it. It is a business he will claim it doesn't represent fair review. Others said same as i did above.

Every penny I spent to the tune of $1000s with Brian Anthoney was wasted money. He failed me every which way possible. When I fired him for failing me he failed - again - to officially release himself as my attorney with the court. My next attorney had to do his job for him and get him officially released. To top it off, 5 months after another lawyer had to do Anthoney's job for him, he sent me a bill for $1100. 5 months later. Huh? What? Out of the blue, 5 months later. So when other reviews claim he isnt exactly on top of it and fails his clients, they couldn't be more correct. Brian Anthoney lacks intestinal fortitude and allows opposing council to intimidate him. He doesn't have the slightest clue as to how to stand up for his client. He caves every step of the way to the other side. Brian Anthoney doesn't understand the concept of medical privacy or a client's strong need to maintain it. He has no issue with his client's medical records possibly being made public by including them in public court proceedings. At one point, he inferred he felt sorry for my exwife. That's when I knew our relationship was coming to an end. Find another lawyer. These are not the lawyers you're looking for.

Crystal was a fantastic lawyer from start to finish, working with me through this whole process. She not only assured me that everything would be done smoothly and with caution, but she answered all my questions and made sure I got the best compensation for my case. When I came to her office, I was so unsure of the outcome and was afraid of the situation, but she made it so simple and I appreciate that more than she could imagine. Being on the receiving end of the accident had caused a lot of pain and stress, but Crystal lightened that burden from the start.

I called Crystal for help with my construction business. After calling 3 other firms and spending more than 2 hours explaining my situation, Crystal was able to work thru the details and get me set up with what I needed in less than 15 minutes. I KNOW who my first call will be if I ever need help again. A true professional. Thanks Crystal McDonald!

I was in a pretty bad car accident back in October of 2013. After consulting with Ashley Armstrong, I made the decision to hire her. I had sustained a severe back injury from my accident, Ashely felt confident that she knew exactly how to handle the case, as I informed her I had previous accidents and other back issues in the past. It took just short of 4 years to get my case settled. I was not in the state for about 1 year of it, and she kept me informed along the whole way. She would call or email whenever I needed to sign documents, meet with her, or for just a quick life update. Ashley handled everything for me so I did not have to worry. It was a battle back and forth between her and the insurance attorney and she fought for me and never gave up. She helped me get through the deposition and the settlement conference. My case ended up getting settled before the trial date and that is all because of Ashley and her team. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for any type of car accident or personal injury case. Very thankful she was in my corner and helped tremendously.

When I first walked into the Ryan, Montgomery & Armstrong, Inc. P.S. office, I had no idea I would be dealing with a wrongful death claim. I originally went in to hire a different lawyer for settling an estate, but soon realized there was a lot more on my hands. I was quickly directed to Ashley who handled the wrongful death portion. Ashley handled my case very professionally and gracefully. She helped to settle the claim quickly and painlessly during one of the hardest times in my life. I was always updated thoroughly whenever something came up and I never felt I didn't understand what was happening. I also felt very much at ease because she handled everything, taking away most of the stress that comes with a wrongful death. Ashley was very attentive to my needs and provided a comprehensive view of the case, so that I could make the best decision based on all the facts. I truly felt like I could place my trust in her and that she would do everything for best of my interest. I couldn't have been more pleased with the results either. Although it was a hard time to go through, I am positive that Ashley made this experience much easier to deal with. I feel that she went above-and-beyond the duty of a lawyer and felt that I had a friend on top of a lawyer. I highly recommend Ashley as she will be a complete and solid team member.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Silverdale, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
