I hired Stephanie to represent me in an Employment and Shareholder dispute. My case was complex and not easily resolved. Working with Stephanie was a pleasure, she is a tough litigator and extremely poised in the court room. If you are looking for someone that can handle a difficult matter with integrity I highly recommend her, I consider her to be one of those rare attorneys that can handle both the legal and personal aspects of a case with the utmost professionalism and care.

Ms. Bloomfield undertook our disability discrimination case against a large law enforcement agency. Through numerous changes in my employer's chain of command, Stephanie's focus and commitment easily identified the legal issues and violations of federal law. Her strong arguments propelled the case forward, and her experience in deposition resulted in their witnesses admitting untruthfulness under oath. As many persons know, a court case is about far more than a final judgment: it is about righting wrongs and ensuring they never happen again. Ultimately, she was able to ensure these violations were a matter of public record - something that was a priority for me, as I had unsuccessfully attempted to resolve this for years. Stephanie helped set a precedence in representation for disabled employees who might be intimidated if they experience hostility and retaliation for requesting accommodation. Stephanie successfully represented me - a judgment was entered against my employer. This would not have happened without her passion and her genuine concern for her client. I felt less like a client, and more like someone who had a strong ally in the courtroom. She answered countless questions, and was far more knowledgeable than I. In cases where my Google research had offered suggested legal considerations - she thoroughly addressed any of my misconceptions and was unfailingly patient with my frequent communications. She was responsive and intelligent - a true privilege to watch her at work. She was incredibly sharp in catching inconsistencies, and was able to destroy the defense's arguments without being unprofessional. I was impressed with Stephanie's perseverance against an agency that seems intimidating to many. With her knowledge and experience, it was of immeasurable relief to see her take on the issues with confidence. I am grateful to Ms. Bloomfield for her determination to right the wrongs in my case.

Ms Bloomfield was my attorney. I was Ms Bloomfield's client. What I did not like about Ms Bloomfield was how she, the lead on economics in my case, did not apply the collateral source rule as it should have been. I trusted her to do a proper job, and such was not the case. Her performance in my case was poor. Thank you.

In the past 20-some years Bob has represented me 4 times. Twice he defended me against criminal charges, and twice was my advocate for injury claims. He was at all times most personable a friendly and always explained the realities of my situation and made sure that I understood what was going on. In all cases he obtained favorable results. His fees for criminal defense were less than what other lawyers quoted me and yet he went full out on my behalf as if I was his only client. (He is a sole practitioner and is sometimes very very busy.) Once he was too busy to take a case from me and referred me to another lawyer who handled my case with high competence and who obtained a great result for my claim. In addition to criminal defense and personal injury work, Bob has assisted my brother, (who is a musician), with some entertainment contracts and is well versed in entertainment law. There are truly not enough stars to rate how helpful Bob is!

My attorney was extremely helpful and considerate. She was flexible with her times to be able to contact me after work. And then did the impossible for me and got my case dismissed! Nothing but good things from these people ! :)

Competent, experienced, empathetic, and results-driven Ryan is competent, empathetic, experienced, results-driven, and successful. Ryan’s knowledge of the law and process is immense and obvious. He invests in the client’s case, and future. He listens, calms, and educates effectively. Most importantly, he’s empathetic and focused. One feels like he/she is Ryan’s only client. There are no guarantees in life, but from my experience, Ryan guaranteed me great service, which was followed by success. I highly recommend Ryan.

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
