Hands down the best law firm out there! I contacted Attorney Scott Marlow last minute and he was by far, the friendliest, most helpful attorney in the area. Scott Marlow and his paralegal, Deborah Long, acted swiftly and effectively when preparing for my case. Perhaps the thing that impressed me most about Scott Marlow was that nothing was "sugar coated.” When you are in financial distress it is difficult to think clearly and make good decisions. He was very straight forward and told me what to expect each step of the way. There were no empty promises made just to keep the client happy, which I know sometimes occurs when seeking counsel. Scott Marlow and his paralegal Deborah Long made the process so much easier and gave me peace of mind in a stressful but successful outcome. Scott Marlow and his paralegal were selected on a recommendation from a friend and was some of the "Best" advice I have ever received.

When this journey began, I knew I wanted the best representation possible. I did my research. I knew I wanted to be represented by someone ethical, tenacious, well-respected, and who would be a strong advocate for me! Bonus points for having good energy and a great sense of humor. It only made sense then that I chose to work with attorney Scott Marlowe. Fighting against a narcissist (ex) for my current husband to adopt my son was not going to be a fun or easy road, but Scott was ready to face the challenge and assured me that he would give it his all. He never gave me unrealistic expectations. I appreciated his honesty, diligence, and professionalism. He’s also super funny! It was his sense of humor that sprinkled much-appreciated ease throughout one of the most emotionally exhausting experiences of my life. It was a life-altering decision to hire Scott— one that I am and will forever be grateful for. It is because of Scott that we were able to win our trial rightfully, terminate the abandoner’s rights, and have my husband adopt my son. Scott always made us feel like we were being taken care of and heard. Any concerns we had were addressed promptly. I never felt like I was in the dark. He and Royann Mercado Perez (his wonderful Paralegal) always kept us well informed. Scott’s presence in the courtroom is one that commands respect from both opposing attorneys and commissioners alike. I was proud to stand beside him and felt confident being represented by him! Thanks to Scott, his knowledge of court processes, his knowledge of the law, and for him being an amazing human being, the deadbeat’s rights were terminated and my son is adopted by the one who has truly been the father to him that he has always deserved. Thank you, Scott, for fighting for our peace and justice.

Scott was super knowledgable and understanding of my simple but complicated divorce trial. Being very transparent of the court and my particular judge, he gave me the skills I needed in order to have an effective argument. Although the outcome wasn't what I hoped for, I felt that I was well prepared. Thank you, Scott!!

In January of 2018 I reached out to Scott in hopes that he would take on my case. I was 4 months into a complicated custody battle with representation from another attorney. Making the switch was something I wish I had done sooner. When we had to go to trial Scott and his team made me feel comfortable and relieved. His confidence in the courtroom and support was truly refreshing. I knew he had my back and he worked hard toward and achieved an outcome that I felt happy with. Since I initially filed for custody of my daughter in 2013, I have had 3 attorneys prior to Scott all which did not offer the same pleasant experience. I continue to keep Scott in my corner and he has been more than helpful answering any questions and addressing any concerns that I have and always responds at his earliest convenience. If you are looking for an attorney I would highly recommend Scott.

In the past 20-some years Bob has represented me 4 times. Twice he defended me against criminal charges, and twice was my advocate for injury claims. He was at all times most personable a friendly and always explained the realities of my situation and made sure that I understood what was going on. In all cases he obtained favorable results. His fees for criminal defense were less than what other lawyers quoted me and yet he went full out on my behalf as if I was his only client. (He is a sole practitioner and is sometimes very very busy.) Once he was too busy to take a case from me and referred me to another lawyer who handled my case with high competence and who obtained a great result for my claim. In addition to criminal defense and personal injury work, Bob has assisted my brother, (who is a musician), with some entertainment contracts and is well versed in entertainment law. There are truly not enough stars to rate how helpful Bob is!

My attorney was extremely helpful and considerate. She was flexible with her times to be able to contact me after work. And then did the impossible for me and got my case dismissed! Nothing but good things from these people ! :)

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
