I engaged Chad on a residential sale transaction and despite the complexities involved, he went extra mile to give me insightful advice and to close out the transaction successfully with a buyer.

Recently, my wife and I were sued and faced with the conundrum of either not defending ourselves and being steamrolled by the plaintiff or hiring a really good attorney to prevent that from happening.  We didn’t see this as much of a choice so we scrambled to find the best possible real estate attorney.  We were referred to Chad Ahrens by a highly qualified and common friend, who happens to be a real estate attorney and a partner at Perkins Coie.  Since our friend practices law in another city, he promptly recommended Chad without hesitation – endorsing him as an attorney that he would hire to represent his interest if he ever had a need for a real estate attorney in Pierce County.     With such a credible recommendation it was a no brainer.  Chad Ahrens proved to be a brilliant attorney while representing our family in a HOA dispute.   We are glad we hired him because he and his team masterfully dismantled the plaintiff's argument and we were ultimately awarded a fully comprehensive victory.  I must point out that Chad was able to achieve such a comprehensive victory because he proceeded with integrity, has extensive expertise on the subject of real estate law and he is ridiculously smart.   Vindication was the ultimate goal, but I appreciate the experience of working with him.  He’s an outstanding communicator and always took an ethical approach.  In spite of the opposing party's motivations, he demonstrated an earnestness at finding and negotiating a resolution by agreement.   With this in mind, I recommend his work without reservation to anyone who requires strong representation in Pierce County.  He protected our family and we believe ourselves very fortunate to have been referred to Chad Ahrens.  I wholeheartedly endorse him because he has impeccable integrity and is a highly capable individual.  Should you or someone you know need a strong attorney, I highly recommend you hire Chad Ahrens to represent you.

We hired Chad for a property issue involving a neighbor that could potentially interfere with our ability to build on our own lot. I received multiple bills from Chad for a draft of a letter to the neighbor. I paid each bill immediately. No letter was ever drafted or sent. When I called, there was always an excuse from Chad assistant(s) and I was repeatedly told the letter would go out the next day. Smith Aling moved their office, and that was another excuse for poor service and delays. After awhile, Chad refused to take my calls. He never responded to emails(about 50 of them). His staff continually put me off with excuses by phone and email, and eventually would not respond either. He drug his feet on this for over a year. We finally gave up and hired another attorney. When we went to pick up our file, it was completely empty. He charged us thousands of dollars for either no work done, or for some reason refused to give it to us. I suspect he never prepared or did very little. He appears very disorganized. We interviewed 3 attorneys to replace Chad. We had to start at ground zero, since Chad refused to give our file. All of them told us that Smith Alling has a lot of young, inexperienced attorneys, and they have heard complaints similar to ours. To make matters worse, Chad did enough meddling to alert the neighbor to a possible legal matter. The neighbor had already retained the best Land Use/Real Estate attorney in the region, and was prepared when we brought in our new attorney. At this point we cannot build our house as intended. Hiring Chad wasted a lot of our money, but most importantly, caused escalation of a small matter and has delayed my project for potentially years. We never understood why Chad did not have the professional courtesy to tell us why he neglected our case so badly. We would rather him admit he could not handle it or was to busy, such that we could have found appropriate counsel, rather than be strung out for so long. We trusted him to be our advocate. Hiring Chad was a disaster for us and actually caused us harm. We do not recommend this firm. Another complaint about the firm: they have errors in their accounting office. I actually used Chad for two separate issues, so they were assigned two account numbers. The billing statement reversed the charges on the two accounts. When I called to straighten it out, I was told "oh it doesn't matter to us, since you are paid up on both accounts." I had to argue that mattered to us, and wanted the bills to accurately reflect the work done for each issue. This is another example of the lack of attention to details by either Chad and/or the firm. By the way, Chad did to properly handle the other issue either. It is still a festering problem for which I will likely have to hire another attorney to get resolution.

Overall, I was very pleased with Mr. Ahrens services. The only caveat is that I wish he did a better job of keeping me informed by responding to all my emails and voicemails in a timely manner.

In the past 20-some years Bob has represented me 4 times. Twice he defended me against criminal charges, and twice was my advocate for injury claims. He was at all times most personable a friendly and always explained the realities of my situation and made sure that I understood what was going on. In all cases he obtained favorable results. His fees for criminal defense were less than what other lawyers quoted me and yet he went full out on my behalf as if I was his only client. (He is a sole practitioner and is sometimes very very busy.) Once he was too busy to take a case from me and referred me to another lawyer who handled my case with high competence and who obtained a great result for my claim. In addition to criminal defense and personal injury work, Bob has assisted my brother, (who is a musician), with some entertainment contracts and is well versed in entertainment law. There are truly not enough stars to rate how helpful Bob is!

My attorney was extremely helpful and considerate. She was flexible with her times to be able to contact me after work. And then did the impossible for me and got my case dismissed! Nothing but good things from these people ! :)

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
