Kathryn Cooperman is an exceptional attorney that provided me with representation this past year during recent legal proceedings. Her dedication, patience, and compassion throughout the entire process were truly remarkable. She constantly demonstrated commitment to ensure that both my children and I were well-represented. Often she would go above and beyond to make sure we would have the best outcome. She is timely and very efficient in handling all the necessary documentation. The promptness and attention to every detail to always ensure the best possible outcome in filing and serving documents were truly commendable. Her ability to explain complex legal terms and process in a clear, understandable, and timely manner was also greatly appreciated. I always felt supported and valued as her client. Kathryn stands out from the other attorneys in that she not only represents her clients well, but she equally operates with a level of compassion. It became quite difficult for me to appear during some of the proceedings, but she was understanding and though there were times when I was not present in court, she represented me well. When I finally did appear during the divorce proceedings, she went above and beyond to ensure that I was okay by being encouraging and positive. She even walked with me a few times in and out of court, and this made a huge difference overall as my anxiety eased and it made court just a bit more bearable. She did not have to go above and beyond, but she did, and it speaks to not only the level of service she provides, but also to the person who she is. I am very grateful to have had Kathryn to represent me this past year. Her overall supportive nature made a significant difference during what was a challenging time for me. The encouragement and reassurance helped me navigate through the legal proceedings with more ease and confidence. Her overall professionalism, dedication, and genuine care for myself, as her client, truly did set her apart. I would not hesitate to recommend her services to anyone in need of legal representation.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Kathryn Cooperman and I cannot express enough how grateful I am for her exceptional legal expertise and professionalism. From the moment I contacted her office, I felt that I was in capable hands and that my case would be handled with utmost care and attention! One of the first things that impressed me about Kathryn was her ability to thoroughly understand the complexities of my situation. She took the time to listen attentively and ask pertinent questions, ensuring that she had a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding my case! This level of commitment and dedication immediately instilled confidence in me. Throughout the entire process, Kathryn consistently demonstrated a deep knowledge of the law and an ability to effectively navigate the legal system. Her expertise and attention to detail were evident in the thorough research and preparation she conducted for my case. She left no stone unturned, ensuring that every aspect of my situation was thoroughly addressed. Furthermore, Kathryn possesses exceptional communication skills. She consistently kept me informed about the progress of my case, promptly returning my calls and emails, and patiently explaining legal terms and procedures in a way that was easy for me to understand. This open line of communication greatly reduced my stress levels, as I always felt informed and involved in the decision-making process. What truly sets Kathryn apart, however, is her unwavering commitment to achieving the best possible outcome for her clients. Kathryn and her team are the way to go!

In the past 20-some years Bob has represented me 4 times. Twice he defended me against criminal charges, and twice was my advocate for injury claims. He was at all times most personable a friendly and always explained the realities of my situation and made sure that I understood what was going on. In all cases he obtained favorable results. His fees for criminal defense were less than what other lawyers quoted me and yet he went full out on my behalf as if I was his only client. (He is a sole practitioner and is sometimes very very busy.) Once he was too busy to take a case from me and referred me to another lawyer who handled my case with high competence and who obtained a great result for my claim. In addition to criminal defense and personal injury work, Bob has assisted my brother, (who is a musician), with some entertainment contracts and is well versed in entertainment law. There are truly not enough stars to rate how helpful Bob is!

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
