Pros
1
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Every time I had a question, whether it was regarding next steps in the case, which paperwork I needed to keep to develop my "paper trail" against my ex, if I should answer phone calls, even what to wear to court, he never made me feel stupid and always took the time to make me feel comfortable with the situation.”
2
Prioritizes client's best interests
“He was able to help my ex and I come to a compromise regarding summertime custody visitation which up until then had been impossible. He is able to not only help find a path that will work for both parties but do so in a manner that feels like you have the best defender possible looking out for your best interests.”
3
Knowledgeable and skilled in the law
“He thoroughly reviewed all documentation I presented, and answered all questions I had in regards to the incident. Because of the high quality legal advice I received from Mr. Nerio, I feel I am much better informed as to how to protect myself against my untrustworthy landlord in the future.”
4
Provides compassionate and understanding support
“During a very stressful family time for us, we could not have been better taken care of. Our attorney, Ron Nerio, along with our paralegal, Jess Buckley, provided us with not only professionalism and an extreme amount of wisdom, but, they also exhibited compassion and were very caring.”
5
Achieves positive outcomes for clients
“I am also happy to say that the out come was all that we hoped, and, they went above and beyond to be sure that a small child's best interests were met.”

If you want a lawyer who will hear you fully and fight for exactly what you want then Ron is for you. He and his team helped me fight for what I desired in this divorce. He was honest about everything and made the horrible process of divorce just a little easier. He was upfront the whole time and prepared me for the good and the bad through every step. I felt like I could trust his work and his word and to me that was invaluable. Ron and his team were by my side this whole time and I am beyond thankful.

Ron was an excellent lawyer throughout the entire process of the divorce. He values the opinion of his clients but always remains the clear voice of reason when emotions become overwhelming. He respects his clients and understands their rights as parents. When the odds are seemingly stacked against his clients he finds ways to even the playing field. His attention to detail and ability to articulate an argument in court greatly contributes to his success and his client's satisfaction. I would recommend Ron Nerio to anyone who needs help with family law. You want him in your corner when it matters most.

During a very stressful family time for us, we could not have been better taken care of. Our attorney, Ron Nerio, along with our paralegal, Jess Buckley, provided us with not only professionalism and an extreme amount of wisdom, but, they also exhibited compassion and were very caring. Ron took over our case more than halfway through and he handled the transition with extreme grace and skill. Family matters can be very emotionally taxing, and, painful. I felt them there for us, they were our rock at a time when we needed that support. Ron stepped right in as if he had been our attorney all along. They helped us hang on to our strength and we will be forever grateful to them. I am also happy to say that the out come was all that we hoped, and, they went above and beyond to be sure that a small child's best interests were met

In the past 20-some years Bob has represented me 4 times. Twice he defended me against criminal charges, and twice was my advocate for injury claims. He was at all times most personable a friendly and always explained the realities of my situation and made sure that I understood what was going on. In all cases he obtained favorable results. His fees for criminal defense were less than what other lawyers quoted me and yet he went full out on my behalf as if I was his only client. (He is a sole practitioner and is sometimes very very busy.) Once he was too busy to take a case from me and referred me to another lawyer who handled my case with high competence and who obtained a great result for my claim. In addition to criminal defense and personal injury work, Bob has assisted my brother, (who is a musician), with some entertainment contracts and is well versed in entertainment law. There are truly not enough stars to rate how helpful Bob is!

My attorney was extremely helpful and considerate. She was flexible with her times to be able to contact me after work. And then did the impossible for me and got my case dismissed! Nothing but good things from these people ! :)

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
