I cannot recommend this attorney highly enough for family court cases, including divorce, parent planning, and child support. He truly understands the importance of doing what’s right for your unique family situation and is dedicated to ensuring that your divorce does not turn into a battlefield. His approach is all about peace and fairness, which is incredibly refreshing in such emotionally charged situations. Don’t let his kindness fool you, though. While he is polite and compassionate, he can be the other party’s worst nightmare when necessary. His weapon of choice is a combination of politeness and strategic thinking, and he knows when to channel his inner lion to fiercely advocate for his clients. If you’re looking for an attorney who balances empathy with assertiveness, look no further. He will guide you through the process with grace and strength, ensuring the best possible outcome for your family.

I entrusted my divorce case to Attorney Stephen, and the level of service and dedication he provided was truly beyond my expectations. Not only did he handle my case with the utmost responsibility and professionalism, meticulously attending to every detail, but he also demonstrated a genuine compassion and commitment towards helping both my child and me through this challenging time. His empathetic approach, combined with his keen legal acumen, made all the difference, guiding us towards a very favorable outcome. Stephen's unwavering dedication to me and my son's well-being was evident in every interaction, and it's clear he went above and beyond to ensure our needs were not just met, but exceeded. His strategic advice and support were invaluable, making me feel fully supported every step of the way. I can sincerely say that not a single cent of what I paid him was wasted; Stephen invested his heart and soul into our case, delivering results that reflect his hard work and dedication. I am immensely grateful for Stephen's efforts and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a compassionate, skilled, and results-driven attorney. His work ethic is truly commendable.

James was very knowledgeable and was able to get us chapter 7 BK instead of 11. He has also been easy to get in touch with and continues answer any questions I've had since filing in 2009. He is the best!

James helped us through bankruptcy. Obviously that was not a great time for us, just about everything that could go wrong did with the development and construction of our home. He helped us through our financial nightmare. The wife of a co-worker, a local Olympia attorney, had highly recommended him and to this day I'm so glad I checked with her. He gracefully guided us through what could have been a very uncomfortable and daunting process. From the very beginning we knew we were in good hands. He listened attentively and clearly explained every step of the process, but most importantly, each time we communicated I knew He would follow through. I could go on and on, ...I was truly amazed. Hecexemplifies the best of your profession ...and I don't pass out compliments lightly.

John is caring, and very skilled and his staff is wonderful to work with. They helped ensure that things moved along accordingly, and we were in piles of IRS debt that was incredibly intimidating and scary to work with but they all made it easy and helped us figure out a game plan that was affordable and something we could accomplish. I appreciate all that you do Sterbick and Associates!! Thanks again so much!!

I don't have enough room to write the details of how wonderful and whimsical my experience was with John and his associates. John helped me in a time of extreme duress and made the process clear and concise while maintaining a pneumatic and kind affect. Truly a lovely member of our community.

Did what he would say he was going to do, when he said he was going to do it. Sometimes it's hard to get a call back, but with John, most of the time he answered the phone himself and he always took my calls. I felt like he truly cared about me and I wasn't just a number.

Kevin and his associate Roxanne were very thorough with my divorce case. They were very detailed on the process and expectations of my part in the divorce and subsequent trial. Having clear expectations, and a process moving forward with my divorce was a great relief for additional stress. Kevin helped me realize what would be a good expectation for the divorce outcome in division of property and debt. He fought for what was fair and for my bottom line regarding the final outcome of the divorce. I would hire Kevin and his associate Roxanne again for any attorney needs.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
