Mr. Lumsden helped me through a very challenging time in my life. He was always there for me and helping me understand each step and being my best advocate. It truly was a blessing knowing that he and his staff were taking care of everything - the bills and insurance companies involved so I could focus on my healing. His staff were always very professional, patient and helpful answering my questions and concerns throughout the whole process. I would highly recommend Mr. Lumsden to anyone. Sincerely, D.B.

Just want to share my story on how Terry helped me out on what proved to be a life-changing event. I was the passenger of a truck on a country road in Tacoma when suddenly our vehicle was hit by a speeding driver who went over the ridge and left me almost dead right at the scene. With the grace of God, I survived the accident but had to fight for my life with severe injuries. I had to endure three major surgeries, nearly a month of recovery in the hospital, and a few months more in rehab that had me spend most of my days in a wheelchair. More than three years of extensive rehab was still not enough to bring me back to the kind of physical freedom and confidence that I used to enjoy prior to the accident. I can completely attest that it has been the darkest days of my life. I couldn't work and the medical bills were piling up and it quickly drained what was left of my savings. Just to let you know, the total medical expenses reached more than $150,000 not to mention the $60,000 worth of wages that I lost when I was stuck either in bed, in the wheelchair, or on crutches. In that moment, I didn't know what to do and there were plenty of times when my faith in the lord and life completely wavered. The driver's insurance company settled for policy limits and from that point on, things turned for the worse. The insurance company insisted that they only had to carry 1/4 of the liability since I was merely a passenger of the truck and not the driver. The company put a lien on the $150,000 and medical bills it had paid which meant that I had to pay the majority of the money back. To bring further insult to injury, they even debated the responsibility of covering my future care. But Terry E. Lumsden was not about to let justice slip away. Terry filed a lawsuit that forced the insurance company to waive its lien and agree to pay for future medical care. Thank you, Terry, for helping me achieve the justice and compensation that I desperately needed!

I was able to work with Terry on a case where his client suffered post-concussion syndrome that resulted in a cerebral infarct. Unfortunately, his client suffered significant injuries. I’ll never forget watching Terry at trial destroy the insurance company’s medical expert’s testimony with his excellent, probing cross-examination. Terry's immense knowledge of human anatomy and the insurance industry is truly world class. Quite simply, he is one of the best personal injury attorneys in Washington State.

It was a blessing on how I was referred and met Terry Lumsden. Ironically, I have turned to him for services that was not necessarily his practice---(estate of my deceased daughter-in-law), then unfortunately got into a MVA and then unfortunate my daughter was then in a MVA approx 2 months aft er. We sure made USE of Terry and his wonderful staff :)......you want a BULLDOG to take your case(s)....this is the MAN!!!!

In the past 20-some years Bob has represented me 4 times. Twice he defended me against criminal charges, and twice was my advocate for injury claims. He was at all times most personable a friendly and always explained the realities of my situation and made sure that I understood what was going on. In all cases he obtained favorable results. His fees for criminal defense were less than what other lawyers quoted me and yet he went full out on my behalf as if I was his only client. (He is a sole practitioner and is sometimes very very busy.) Once he was too busy to take a case from me and referred me to another lawyer who handled my case with high competence and who obtained a great result for my claim. In addition to criminal defense and personal injury work, Bob has assisted my brother, (who is a musician), with some entertainment contracts and is well versed in entertainment law. There are truly not enough stars to rate how helpful Bob is!

My attorney was extremely helpful and considerate. She was flexible with her times to be able to contact me after work. And then did the impossible for me and got my case dismissed! Nothing but good things from these people ! :)

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Tacoma, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
