I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the mediation services David Hazel provided our family which led to the resolution of my father's estate. Dave's professionalism, expertise, and commitment to fostering understanding among all parties involved was vital in achieving resolve we all were hoping for. Upon my first interaction, not only was I impressed with his firm knowledge of Washington estate law, but also how well he understood the intricacies within our unique family dynamic and what led to our subsequent stalemate. His attention to detail instilled confidence in me that we were in capable hands. In addition to his knowledge base, what really sets Dave apart is his genuine caring and empathetic approach for the people he’s working with. He took the time to listen to our concerns, fears, and hopes, providing a safe and supportive environment for open dialogue. He then skillfully facilitated conversations, helping us navigate complex and emotionally charged issues we weren’t able to handle on our own. I truly believe it was his patient and compassionate demeanor that made it easier for all parties to lower our walls and ultimately find our way to resolution. Dave made every effort to ensure all voices were heard and respected. Throughout the process, it was reassuring for me to witness his ability to remain neutral, maintain positive focus of the end goal, and offer out of the box solutions to our case’s particular challenges. For these reasons, I can absolutely say that Dave Hazel was instrumental in accomplishing resolution that worked for everyone. This outcome would have been nearly impossible without his guidance and support. If you're looking for a mediator who goes above and beyond, Dave is the one to trust.

David was amazing with our mediation. He helped calm all parties and did his homework as to the issues involved. He gave great advice and we were able to get the case closed without going to court. Thanks, David.

Dave Hazel represented me in a child custody case in 2008 and was an absolutely wonderful attorney who worked hard and was dedicated fighting on my behalf. I hired him again in 2015 and the worst attorney I could have hired who was also several thousand dollars more than the average, He was unprepared for court, did not even know our correct names in front of the judge and then had the audacity to blame me for his unpreparedness, His staffs was just as incompetent and unpleasant, When I was assertive about getting my case corrected I was told by Mr. Hazel to stop being rude to his staff! It was when the other attorneys in the courtroom began to make comments to Mr. Hazel about the lack of knowledge he had in my case that he became irate and told me that he was going to lose and therefore withdrawing because he didn’t want any losses on record. He refunded me about $500 from the $5000 I paid upfront in cash! He deserted the case and left me without an attorney or funds to hire another, Although this was a few years ago I will never forget his rude and arrogant disposition and lack of ethical principals regarding his profession, Don’t make the same mistake I did and hire this attorney as It took me years to regain what I lost when Mr. Hazel left me hanging our to dry when it was his own incompetency and greed that I paid for and I trusted in him when in return I was given lazy and terrible representation from him and treated poorly by his disrespectful and unprofessional staff.

Attorney David Hazel is the most incompetent and inefficient attorney in Yakima. He does not put forth any effort, he will not communicate with you, nor does he follow court procedure. He is lazy and does not allow you one on one time to build your case with him. He charges for time not spent with him...I cannot say anything good about his representation.

I enjoyed working with Erik Bakke, he was very informative, and made me feel confident in my situation. Bankruptcy is a hard and embarrassing time and Erik helped me and my family through it as if we were family. I was on the cusp of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13, although it took more time and more effort Erik fought for me and he won the battle. I appreciate his professionalism and compassion, and will go to him again if I am ever in need of a Lawyer.

Erik knows his stuff and can be as tough as he needs to be. However, he is very sensitive to his clients' needs, both legal and personal, and works with them to achieve a satisfactory outcome. He knows his stuff, cares about his clients, and continues to serve even after "the case is closed." I would always trust Erik to help me!

I couldn't of asked for a more patient lawyer. Mr. Bakke was so helpful in every aspect of my case. If I had a question about anything he was right there to answer and I could ask him anything and he didnt make me feel dumb at all. He always took my worries and made me feel like I would get through it all, and he made sure everything worked out just fine.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Yakima, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
