Brandon Shumaker is an excellent Attorney at Law!! He is just your ordinary, laid back, country kinda guy, but when he is in court, he commands the court room! He made us feel very at ease on our first meeting and we felt right away that we pick the right man to represent us. He kept us informed of the process as it went along, and always available for any questions we had. His criminal defense is top notch! Very knowledgeable in law. We will recommend him to all who ask. His retainer fee was very fair for the defense he provided us. Thank you Brandon Shumaker!

Brandon knows exactly what he is doing in the court of WV . He is very familiar with most if not every judge you could end up facing. He eased my fear right away after consulting with him, and he told me whats most likely going to happen. In the end my felony was dropped and the plea agreement was much better than expected. My mistake won't haunt me for the rest of my life thanks to Brandon.

There is so much I can say about Brandon Shumaker, he is an excellent lawyer who's character and integrity are amazing. We were put in a position where we were unable to afford an attorney and Brandon was appointed by the Court to represent my child I can honestly say when we first met Brandon from the beginning there was a comfort we felt. He made a statement to us and we found it to be true. Not financially being able to afford counsel and facing the charges presented, Brandon never looked at the case differently due to the inability to pay, this in itself spoke volume to the respect that we have for him. He worked the case diligently with the same amount of care and concern as if he were getting paid. And in the end the result was amazing. In life when something happens and you make a bad decision there is a price to pay, and in the end as opposed to years that price ended up being 6months which was a fair and acceptable plea. He truly fought and if you are looking for an attorney to represent you with the best possible outcome, one who cares and will not treat you any differently based on what you have done.....THIS IS THE MAN....He is one of the Best.......Thanks Brandon

I was hit by an ATV operated on a highway in rural WV while I was riding my Motorcycle. I lived, but shattered my shoulder blade, broke my right hand and tore my knee. Thank God the jerk had insurance but unfortunately it was State Farm. Even though the guy got a ticket for operating on a roadway, State Farm denied my claim; coming up with all sorts of stupid reasons why me getting hit by an off road vehicle with no lights, signals or plates was somehow my fault. To add insult to injury....it seemed nobody wanted to take my case! I called every attorney in the greater Morgantown area and was told that It wasn't quote: 'a slam dunk case'. Thankfully Jon Godwin of Columbo Law agreed to hear my case. I went from nothing, to getting every penny due to me. Medical expenses-paid. Property damages-paid. Even an Under-insured claim against my own insurance to cover lost time from work. Jon was helpful and understanding, working with me for almost two years until resolution; and only making marginal profit on my case. He advised me on insurance law, policy limits, and even what to say and do 'heaven forbid' when/if this happens again. Thanks Jon, and Columbo law for taking my case; thanks for everything.

My spouse and I got divorced, and she filed filed the paperwork. She made many untrue claims trying to make me look bad so I wouldn’t have any custody of our child. Lance was confident, and really did a great job in court. Every time we’d leave a hearing I was impressed with his performance. There were times when I would try to get in contact with him and it would take a few days to get a call back from him-which was frustrating. Overall he is knowledgeable and fights for his clients. I’d recommend him to anyone looking for a good divorce lawyer. He also had an interesting sense of humor.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Morgantown, West Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
