I had experience with Habush and Habush in 2007. They took really good care of a co-worker. So I wasn’t going to go anywhere else. Whitney did a very good job for me. Kept me informed of everything that was going on in my case. She answered all the questions I had. And she protected the things I valued the most. Thank you for everything. Samuel O’Brien

OUTSTANDING! is the One word that sums up working with Attorney Joseph Troy and the Habush, Habush and Rottier office in Appleton WI. My personal injury case involved a man in a hurry backing out of his driveway right in front of me as I’m riding on my bike. Needless to say this was a complicated case that involved two insurance companies, Medicare, and other parties. Joe and his team took care of every detail and were always available when needed. I highly recommend them. These are the only people I would use. Thanks again Joseph Troy and the entire Habush, Habush & Rottier team!

I am truly thankful that I retained Joseph Troy to help me after a driver pulled out in front of me on the highway (!) and totaled my car. Not only was I freed from the hassle the negligent party's insurance company was trying to put me through, and had someone to make sure all my medical bills were properly paid, but when the case took an unexpected and unpleasant turn at one point, Attorney Troy's compassionate handling of the situation earned my heartfelt gratitude. I am thankful that he is not only a good lawyer, but a good man. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who needed an accident/injury attorney.

Great group of people working together. Jeff surprised me by the level of accessibility throughout the process. He is well-informed about all the twists and turns that the legal system has when it comes to dealing with an OWI and related offenses. If I decided to step on a slippery slope of crime and punishment, I would definitely retain him. If you got an OWI, and especially if it is your first one, do yourself a favor, meet with Jeff.

My 20-year-old son is a good kid who's had a rough childhood. Critical self-esteem issues drove many of his decisions that resulted in several serious and varied charges across 4 different jurisdictions over a 10 month period. It was a mess that Attorney Kippa handled for us even though we complicated it by following through with our plan to move out of state immediately upon retaining him. Despite all that, he delivered for my son the best possible outcome, and he did it with the grace and respect my son desperately needed given his emotional condition. It was of the utmost importance to me that I find an attorney who had genuine compassion for what my son was going through, and Attorney Kippa proved time and again to be that person.

I retained Attorney Schubert's services for a very emotionally difficult divorce. During my initial consultation, he explained the different options available (mediation, collaborative or traditional litigation) so that I could choose what would work best for my individual situation. I was previously unaware there were "options". Attorney Schubert was also very professional when dealing with my soon to be ex-spouse...much more so that I was able to be! It was such a relief to have someone to speak on my behalf who wouldn't make things worse. Attorney Schubert demonstrated great compassion during the entire process. He realizes the level of stress and emotional strain people go through during divorce and how it can affect decision-making, so he explained all of the steps involved very thoroughly and also provided a binder of detailed information to further assist me when talking with trusted friends and relatives. This relieved a lot of anxiety surrounding what to expect with court appearances, etc. I felt as though he was working with me, not only to help me understand what to expect during the process and why, but also to help me make a smoother transition to life post-divorce. Attorney Schubert made a horrible situation tolerable for me and it was a smooth a process as divorce can be.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Appleton, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
