Mr. Hammett will do the least amount of work possible. Showed up late to the divorce hearing. Definitely do not think I received $20,000 worth services.

Stephen kept things moving forward even when they got difficult. He was always very prompt to respond and never wasted my time. Divorce sucks all the way around, but he made it as painless a process as he could and I was happy with the result of my case. Definitely recommend him as a lawyer, worth every penny.

I am not going to sugar-coat this, I wanted to fight with everything inside of me for my child's safety and well-being during a long (almost 5 years) custody battle. I began the process alone but I quickly recognized that because this was my child, I was more emotionally-driven and less logic-based in my fight. Stephen Fozard brought logic, patience, and expertise into our world & I am confident that the recent outcome of our case would not have been the same without his guidance, honesty, and dedication to the advocacy of my little one - when she could not speak up for herself. We will be eternally grateful to Mr. Fozard & I would highly recommend him to every parent(s) who is in need of a guiding hand through this messy and confusing legal system. THANK YOU STEPHEN!!!!!

Attorney Fozard handled my custody case, which had several complex and unusual challenging circumstances. Throughout the entire process, from initial consultation to final orders, I never doubted my decision to work with Stephen. He is very knowledgeable, responsive, and down to Earth. He understands family law very well, and will tell it to you straight in giving you accurate and valuable insights on what’s possible, what’s reasonable, what likely outcomes are at each step in the process, etc. He doesn’t beat around the bush, but at the same time is polite and pleasant to interact with. He will not send you in circles to rack up “billable hours” chasing nonsense, nor will he allow opposing counsel to. He’s very quick to get derailed action and dialogue back on track behind the scenes and in the court room. He has an excellent courtroom presence and demeanor. He comes to court with his facts straight and his homework completed and is an extremely effective advocate. All of these items aside, which is basically me stating that I feel he is a very competent and capable attorney, I found in my interactions with him that he is also a genuinely good person. He has a high level of integrity, and beyond representing you, it was also clear to see that he had a very human focus on achieving what was “best for the kids” in my case, not simply what I wanted versus what opposing party wanted. He will represent you well, he will guide you responsively and accurately, he will do his homework and come prepared, and if your experience is anything like mine your interactions with him will likely be the only positive part of finding yourself in a situation where you need a family law attorney. I would highly, highly recommend considering Atty Fozard if you need family law representation.

It was so nice working with him! He truly cared about the situation we were going through. He dug deep to find the answers we needed and was able to help us out tons before he even requested a retainer! He has been truly amazing to work with. I would suggest him to anyone! Can't thank him enough for all of the help he was able to provide for my family. Definitely will be coming back to him if needed in the future.

I’ve never had any experience with having a lawyer, and honestly it terrified me. Thankfully Jacob was by my side for this case. His confidence assured me I was in good hands. He’s very calm and collected, making this situation a breeze when I expected a hurricane. If I ever get into any kind of legal conflict, Jacob is the first one I’m calling without a doubt.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Appleton, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
