Long Story Short Two years ago, there was a major hailstorm in Hudson, WI. I requested a quote to repair the hail damage to my house from a trusted contractor I had used before: Element Exteriors. They came back with a quote of $32,000 to replace siding, gutters and the roof. I submitted my claim to my insurance company. They sent out an Adjuster to appraise the damage. After reviewing their Adjuster's report, they came back with an offer of $2,500 after my $1700 deductible. They didn't see the need for replacement, only minor repairs. Obviously, I disagreed with their assessment since most of my neighborhood had roof, siding and gutters replaced. Most notably, the neighbors on both sides of me. The State of Wisconsin has a law that if there is a disagreement on the settlement, there must be an Independent Appraisal. My insurance company refused to participate in or authorize an Independent Appraisal, which was against Wisconsin State Law. So, I hired Drew Nelson at Nelson and Lindquist to force my insurance company to comply with Wisconsin Law. After two years of fighting with my insurance company, Drew was able to get my insurance company to agree to an Independent Appraisal. After the Independent Appraisal and engaging in the "Mediation Process", Drew was able to convince my insurance company to pay what we felt the policy required of them and I was able to move forward with the replacement of my roof and siding.

Jeremiah gave my adopted son Tony a free consultation in Jail at St Croix county. Jeremiah is very very knowledgeable in the law. Very technical. He really gave Tony. good advice. He has a very good listener. Plus, he is very kind and compassionate. I didn’t think the two would go together. I don’t know much about hiring a lawyer or legal matters, but Jeremiah was very patient with me and explained the steps I had to take. I would definitely recommend him. I think he is an excellent attorney. Jackie DeBauche North Hudson, Wisconsin February 22, 2004

Our family was in need of a defense Lawyer. We talked to a few other lawyers and they recommended Aaron Nelson. They referred to his practice as being the beet choice. That right there was very reassuring. At our first consultation we all felt more at ease. He was in the confident driver’s seat, ready, carefully listening to our horrific, terrifying story. When I say us it’s because our case involved a TBI client which resulted from an automobile accident that claimed the lives of 3 beautiful children. All of which were a part of our family, and she was the driver of the car. A year or more after the accident the state decided to press charges. The more meetings we had with Attorney Nelson the more our confidence grew. We realized Aaron’s Defense had our lives in their hands. It didn’t take long to fully know every decision he handed his client were thought through, researched and weighed out. A week long trial ended up being 3 days. Everyone was in awe as they watched his defense team in action. It’s always horrifying during a trial and waiting for a jury verdict, but having this whole defense team taking over gave us all a sense of calmness. I know we wouldn’t have felt like this with any other firm. Jury deliberation took 2 hours with a unanimous not guilty on all counts. Even if the outcome would have went a different way for some unknown reason we would have felt the same way about Nelson Defense. They are a team. Once you are a part of it and see how this team operates and performs you know they give 100% This family and supporters give them 100% recommendation.

I hired Aaron Nelson after I was charged with two felonies. Aaron talked with me about my case for free. Others wanted $10,000 prior to meeting with me. Aaron explained everything I needed to know about about my case to me. We agreed on a price and I hired him. He explained how long the case might take and the difficulties the prosecution would have in proving me guilty. His belief in me saved my life as I was suicidal at the time. I needed to hear that someone would fight for me. Aaron gave me two options in paying him. He said the case may take two years or more but no matter how long it took, he would not ask for any more money. Aaron questioned some of the "evidence" against me and three weeks later, after my accuser admitted to lying about everything, the charges were dropped. Te judge was reluctant to expunge my record but Aaron was able to convince the judge that it would be a travesty of justice to allow my arrest to remain on my record. He also did something that I will be eternally grateful for. He gave me a refund. I told him that per our agreement he was entitled to the full amount. He said " Yes, legally I'm entitled to the money but morally it wouldn't be right," I was dumbfounded. I not only found a great defense attorney but one with morals. I'm just sorry I can only give him five stars. And his assistant Connie was someone I will never forget either. She really cared about me as a person. When I called the office to tell her and Aaron that I had received a call from the police and they were going to recommend the charges be dropped, we both started to cry. I was lucky to find a law firm with honest and caring people. I hope I never need him again but it's a great comfort knowing he's out there.

Aaron represented me in a case involving the Wisconsin DNR. He did a thorough job, painstakingly taking the time to learn all the facts, visiting the site of the incident and talking to individuals involved. He was completely prepared for the trial and his preparation showed in the professional way I was represented. He made it exceedingly clear that I was I right in my actions and the jury agreed. I have recommended Aaron to anyone who needs a defense attorney.

Daniel was the best and kindest lawyer I’ve yet to interact with. He reassured my mom, he was honest about what needed to be done, he listened to my worries and concerns and never spoke down to me, and he worked hard in my defense. By working together, he was able to demonstrate my innocence and get my case dismissed and so I am extremely happy I chose him to represent me!

Mindy has been wonderful to work with! My husband and I are in our 30's with young children so we are not, by any means, knowledgeable in legal matters pertaining to the "what if" questions of our home, property, and most importantly, our children, if something were to happen to us. Thankfully, Mindy is! We didn't think we had enough "stuff" or money to have a trust but when Mindy sits down with you to "lay it all out", it is quite shocking what one actually has! She made us feel very comfortable through the entire process and confident that we were making the right decisions in protecting our family. We started truthfully not even knowing what a trust was, we just knew we did not want our children and belongings in the court system, and ended with the confidence and knowledge of how a trust works and how everything will be handled if the worst happens. Mindy made this process easy to understand- she speaks in layman's terms which is not always the case with lawyers! I would highly recommend meeting with Mindy if you are even slightly concerned with the "what if's or what would happen to my family if I were gone" questions. She's truly interested in what is best for you and your family and is not pushy at all. She's caring and empathetic, educated and down-to-earth!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hudson, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
