Judith helped me with my divorce back in 2008, and was extremely professional. She was also caring, sympathetic, and honest. If she thought something was outlandish on mine or my ex-husband's end--she'd tell me. She always responded promptly and efficiently. She helped me through my very difficult time. I'm very glad I came across her, and would recommend her to anyone.

I was first referred to Judith by a friend of a friend. My situation was a sticky one including an OFP against my (at the time) husband along with handling our divorce (and custody of our 3 children) concurrently. It was an extremely difficult time in my life and having Judith as my lawyer gave me confidence and a feeling of security throughout the process. She took the time to listen and fully understand the dynamics of the situation throughout the 12 months it took to fully go through the process of handling the OFP, SENE, guardian ad litem, mediation and negotiations of custody and financial arrangements, all divorce proceedings and child support hearing. During all court dates and negotiations, I always knew that Judith was looking out for my (and my children's) best interests and her approach of handling herself was always in the manner I would hope an attorney would act - in control and honestly, having "no time" for shenanigans coming from opposing counsel. Judith was always very up front with me with realistic expectations from the courts and legal system, which was invaluable - particularly as I've never been through any of this before (as most haven't). Learning legal terminology, laws and processes is overwhelming, particularly when mixed with a high emotional time. Judith was on top of it all, keeping me informed with full explanations. Financial-wise, Judith was able to effectively stick to the initial discussed monies needed to cover expenses, I never once felt "nickel and dimed". I will absolutely recommend Judith in the future!

Since the first moment I me Judith I knew she cared about me and my case. I would/ have recommended her to people I know and loved ones. She is always there to go over thoughts and issues that come up. When I first met her she was my layer and now I consider her a friend and advocate. There has been many complicated/confusing issues with my cases and Judith has always known what to do or say. When issues come up the first Person I call is her because I know she will tell it straight to me. if you want someone that cares and will put her heart into it, Judith is the one I will always choose.

I hired Judith in 2001 for my divorce. I was so pleased with her service that I referred her to a friend of mine in 2002 that was also going thru a divorce. He was also extremely satisfied with her service. Since then Judith has been me and my husbands attorney and has always been available for any questions or concerns we may have. We have used Judith with all our attorney needs for 13 years. She also does criminal law and my husband has used her for driving violations and several times for child support modifications over the years. She is very professional and very reasonable in her fees. She has become part of our family since we have known her for so many years. I would not and will not ever hire anybody but Judith!

Russ is an amazing attorney. He stood by my every step of the way even when I had a mental break down after i had been convicted. ( Russ didn't go down without a fight though, easily the best criminal defense I had ever had) he helped me through everything and even though I ot convicted instead of going to prison like the DA asked for i got three years probation with no jail time thanks to Russ' arguments. Thank you Russ, for everything.

Candice is an excellent attorney who recently helped me with a difficult situation and has been quick and swift and fair, pricing wise. I have used AVVO for years in my business whenever I sought an excellent lawyer. This time it was personal and as always AVVO provided me a top professional. They are the best and so is Candice. She knows the laws well and took great care of me.

I was falsely accused of harassment by an ex and was served with a restraining order. I contacted Attorney Tlustosch and she quickly got back to me. I hired her and she got the case dismissed. I found her to be knowledgeable, competent and passionate about her work. I would recommend her to anyone reading this profile.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of La Crosse, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
