I would highly recommend Christine Tomas! After my first attorney dismissed me 3 days before my pre- trial hearing on my divorce. I was able to get SHORT continuance for hearing to find another attorney. I had contacted many lawyers who would not help me or wanted a lot of money for retainer !! I was told by many lawyers they do not enough time to prepare for a trial hearing in less than 2 months... time was running out for me!!! and then a miracle happened ..I was referred to Christine Tomas. This woman has a heart of gold! I sat for a consultation that was only scheduled for an hour and Christine reviewed my case for 2 hours with me and only charged me an hour for the consultation !!! She found things in that consultation on my case that raised some concerns that my other attorney over looked since my divorce started in Aug of 2018!!! She took my case when know one else would help me with the little time she had to prepare and excelled! Her compassion and empathy goes hand in hand with her intelligence. My divorce prior to hiring Christine was dragged out by other attorney for over a year and cost me a lot. Christine is fair and reasonable and worth it !! I was able to get my divorced settled January 14 2020 without having to go to trial. This woman is well respected and has a way with people, other attorneys and judges that when she speaks they listen. I was able to relocate with my 5 year old son out of the state to be closer to my family that lives 1500 miles away!! Before I hired Christine I had spent over 15 grand on a Attornery that did nothing for me in a year and a half . Christine did more for me in 2 months than my prior attorney did for me in over 1 1/2 !! My case was very complicated. What I paid to hire her was extremely reasonable and she saved me a lot of money without having to go to trial on my divorce. With a outcome of what I exactly wanted!!! If I had to lose all the money I lost from my prior attorney all over again just to have been able to cross paths with Christine to help me ... I would because I would’ve never had received the outcome I did for my divorce without Christine!!! Trust me if you are considering hiring an attorney even if your case is complicated or easy ..I would highly recommend her. She is honest and will tell you straight up what you are dealing with. But most importantly her character and compassion goes above and beyond. She didn’t have to take my case it was a lot with the short amount of time to prepare. I still felt like I was number one I still felt that I was important even though I knew she had other clients she always had time to deal with my complicated case. She was very patient and made me feel that everything was going to be OK in that short amount of time . I not only gain the respect for this woman. when I was at my the lowest point in my life and I had nowhere to go she helped me. Christine Tomas is not just some attorney looking to get paid. She is caring and I now consider her my friend. I will always hire again if I ever need her!! I will never go to any other attorney again!! So anyone that is struggling with the sadness and pain of a divorce and not only wants an attorney to fight for them but wants an attorney to listen and actually care hands-down just go get a consultation and see for yourself how amazing and hard-working Christine is!!!

I was looking for a female lawyer that would represent me in a divorce in Walworth County. After reviewing the qualifications of various female attorneys, I chose Christine Tomas. My choice was right. Her representation was outstanding. What I thought would be a long, dragged out process was done upon the 120th day. She was easy to understand, and work with. I recommend her to anyone seeking professional law counsel. Again, OUTSTANDING! Michael Kummer

Christine and her assistant are highly distracted and disorganized. Weeks would go by with no activity from either of them. It felt as if neither of them ever had time to focus on my case. If you are looking for a team that will work hard with your best interest as their ultimate goal. Look elsewhere.

Chris Duesing did a great job negotiating with the insurance company. His persistence paid off in the final settlement. It was stress free once I hired Chris and his staff. Their friendly, unassuming style was refreshing. I recommend Chris as an experienced personal injury attorney.

Where to begin? My divorce was not easy there were so many hurdles in my divorce but that is a story for another day. From the second I met Kelly my decision was made this was my attorney and on top of that a sounding board for me to bounce ideas off of. She helped me fight for my children, and never stopped. She was always very well thought out when speaking to me and explained things in terms that I could understand. I would recommend Kelly to anyone in need of a lawyer. If I had to explain Kelly to anyone I would say the she is Smart, capable, rational, dependable, outgoing, kind, consistent and a leader. From the bottom of my heart, Kelly is truly amazing. Thank you so much.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
