I was confused and devastated with what my ex put me through regarding our son. I did my research and decided to go with Cordell and Cordell! Everyone I met at the firm was courteous, professional, and extremely helpful! Elisabeth was who I ended up going with from the firm, and I couldn’t have been any more satisfied! She is extremely knowledgeable! She is very down to earth. Being my first experience with attorneys, I had no clue what I was doing. She was very understanding and helpful throughout the entire process, and even after!! She(and my son) is worth every penny and more! Highly reccomended to any parent out there, but especially anyone who feels hopeless, as I did! Unfortuantly, I feel my battle won’t be over anytime soon, but I am a lot more comfortable and confident, that a great father and an amazing little boy will not be torn apart unnecessarily, as long as I have Elisabeth Fletcher representing me!

In short, Elisabeth has been wonderful to work with. Her approach is to be a concerned listener first which puts both of us in a better position to negotiate without compromising on the issues I feel most strongly about. She is always thinking ahead on what will need to happen next in the legal process and is very diligent in keeping me posted on what is going on with my case. Being such a good listener also has the advantage that she is often the 'calm' in my 'storm' when I am experiencing high levels of anxiety with what is happening between myself and the other party. Making me feel like I am not alone in my fight for my rights as a Father is why I chose Cordell & Cordell and I also feel that, with Elisabeth, they have provided me with one of the best partners within their legal team to represent me. Elisabeth did a fantastic job as my attorney. I retained her to help with a custody issue regarding my son when I moved to California to be with family. His mom contested my 17 year old son's desire to move with us and attend school in California. Despite my ex-wife's best efforts, Elisabeth was successful at ensuring that my son could move with us. Throughout the process, she was in constant communication with me to make sure I understood what was going on and was always available to answer any questions I had. Her knowledge of family law was evident every step of the way. I only wish I had used her services when I went through my divorce 7 years ago. Elisabeth Rocks!

I have tried other law firms with little positive results. I felt like I was just a number to other firms. I specifically selected Cordell & Cordell Law of Madison because they indeed represent the man's point of view in a divorce case. I am a hurting person in need of sincere help and concern. I have now found that sincere and capable help I sought. My case is 17 years and five court appearance in length at present. Ms. Elisabeth Fletcher is my attorney and I am well pleased with her knowledge of the law and most importantly that she continues to listen to my story. Ms Fletcher has always provide me with choices. I do feel I have received the best possible legal advice for my particular case. I agree that her advice and efforts have always been done with my best possible interest in mind. Communication between client and attorney is quick and easy with complete understanding for the various courses of action we could take in my court case. Yes,I am very pleased and would recommend Ms Fletcher as she truly cares about me as a person and not just a number.

Rick Coad has been a patient, prompt, thorough and persistent representative of my interests in an insurance claim. He was reasonable and logical in his assessment. I was more than satisfied with his skills and the conclusion of the case. I would hire him again in a minute!

Richard Coad handled a matter for me that was unique, complex, and 20 years old. Something that had been nagging at me for two decades. Over the course of that time I had consulted with other attorneys and none of them had a clue on how to handle it, or had even heard of a situation like mine. When I reached out to Mr. Coad for guidance on my case he was in a remote area vacationing with his family but still took the time to respond. He seemed highly intrigued by my case and showed a genuine interest in getting me the result I wanted. Not only did he succeed in an honestly impressive manner, but he was always easy to reach and kept me well informed every step of the way. An outstanding attorney with a big heart and a pretty good sense of humor too.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Madison, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
