If you need a lawyer, call Atty Visser!! Just chatting with her, she will put your mind at ease! We have hired her for more than one issue, and I highly recommend her! If she doesn't have an answer, she won't stop until she finds one. Her knowledge of the law is phenomenal and I wish we would have found her years ago! She will absolutely fight for you! Thank you, Kira for going the extra mile!!

Kira has been helping me out on a number of fronts for the last 9 months. She comes across as highly empathetic and she is a great listener. She is going to be a great advocate for you in times of crises. She guides you correctly and has an excellent knowledge of the law. Don’t underestimate her due to her young age and her stoic demeanor. Underneath that monotonous tone and unflappable temperament lies a sharp legal mind. Though my case is not done yet, I am expecting a favorable outcome since Kira is on my side. I will recommend her highly.

I hired Kira Visser after I hired another attorney who wanted me to plead guilty and do 3years probation, she refused to listen to me. I almost lost everything. I am so very grateful for her that she turned it around and was able to help me beat my case. I highly recommend her to anyone.

Last year, when I started the divorce process I was so lost since I am an immigrant and I have no family in America to support me. Then I talked to several attorneys. After I talked to Kira, I was pretty sure she was the one I needed to hire. She was so smart, fast responsive, and efficient. At the beginning, I was very emotional. She was very patient and a good listener. She spent 2 hours during our first meeting and wrote me back a full document to summarize my situation, my need, and plans. I was very impressed by her professionalism and efficiency. Our whole divorce process was long as we have child custody involved. She is very caring and calm, trying her best to represent me during multiple hearings, and negotiations with the other partner's attorney. She drafted all the MSA and pushed forward the whole process even the other attorney from my ex-spouse didn't do anything. Even she is a young attorney, she is so much more responsible and can choose the right direction for the customers. Looking back the whole year, I feel I am so lucky that I have chosen the right attorney. She saved me tons of money for the divorce process and made the best outcome for the whole process. I would highly recommend her if you have either simple or complicated family cases since she can handle them so well. She is definitely a rising star in Madison. Thank you so much, Kira!

Rick Coad has been a patient, prompt, thorough and persistent representative of my interests in an insurance claim. He was reasonable and logical in his assessment. I was more than satisfied with his skills and the conclusion of the case. I would hire him again in a minute!

Richard Coad handled a matter for me that was unique, complex, and 20 years old. Something that had been nagging at me for two decades. Over the course of that time I had consulted with other attorneys and none of them had a clue on how to handle it, or had even heard of a situation like mine. When I reached out to Mr. Coad for guidance on my case he was in a remote area vacationing with his family but still took the time to respond. He seemed highly intrigued by my case and showed a genuine interest in getting me the result I wanted. Not only did he succeed in an honestly impressive manner, but he was always easy to reach and kept me well informed every step of the way. An outstanding attorney with a big heart and a pretty good sense of humor too.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Madison, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
