Was assigned one of their attorneys as a public defender. Just my luck to receive one that wouldn't defend me. It was as if he was too passive. Just didn't want to argue on my behalf or at all for that matter. I went to court for disorderly conduct, domestic violence. I told him I would not plead guilty to domestic violence because my ex lied when she said I pushed her. He proceeded to to convince me to accept a plea bargain assuring me that it was only for disorderly conduct as I did punch my truck. I agreed because he assured me that domestic violence was not going to be charged, just the disorderly conduct. Once I accepted the no contest plea I was given 16 months probation and ordered to attend domestic violence counseling. When I started to protest my attorney told me not to interrupt the judge. I wouldn't recommend this firm as far as their public defender goes. He will lie to you and you will suffer for it.

I had retained attorney Walczak's services for a divorce proceeding. Divorce's in general, on a personal side, can be extremely difficult as personal issues tend to create confusion and uncertainty. I cannot stress strongly enough how impressed I was with how professional, yet completely thoughtful and responsive attorney Walczak (Steffanie) was during my entire process. She was always quick to respond to any email or phone call I left for her. She listened carefully to my concerns and provided excellent legal advice on each and every matter I brought up. I would highly recommend her. When you are a client of hers, you feel you are more than just a number. She truly provides you with individual attention and takes the time to make sure you feel all your questions or concerns are covered. This is more than I can say for other attorney relationships I have experienced and/or heard about from others.

I have worked with Attorney Walczak for the past 3 years. My daughter's custody case is complex; she was diagnosed with ASD in the middle of it all. Attorney Walczak has always made me feel that she cares about my daughter & does whatever she can to relay what is important to the judges we have been in front of as well as GAL. She has always helped me prepare for court dates well. She is not one to over promise/under achieve. I feel that in my daughters 'final custody hearing' 2 years ago & the emergency hearing she got us about a month ago, my family & I have walked out of the courtroom very happy with the results & have felt incredibly thankful to Attorney Walczak for helping us get a better outcome than we thought possible. I had worked with a different attorney for about the first year of this custody case, & working with Attorney Schaff is night & day experience & I am so happy I found her. She is very good about returning emails & phone calls, & if she personally can't respond very soon, her paralegal (who is also wonderful!) will usually call or email with an update/answer from Attorney Walczak. I have never felt ignored by her or anyone I have encountered at her office in any way. Unlike with my first attorney, I have also never felt that Attorney Walczak or any of the staff I have experienced at Petit & Dommerhausen SC have taken advantage of me, lied to me, or let me/my daughter down. I recommend Attorney Walczak to anyone who is looking for legal representation in a child custody case. Her rates are also quite reasonable in my opinion, & she helps save clients money by having her paralegal do certain things jnstsD of personally doing every single thing if it is something that the paralegal is qualified to do. Attorney Walczak has definitely gone above and beyond for me (& most importantly my daughter), & I can't thank her enough for that.

I hired Atty. Taggart after being charged with 3 misdemeanors. She always got back to me and was thorough in answering my questions the best she could. I could not have asked for a better result at the end of my case. I definitely recommend.

My boyfriend and I worked with Kayla Taggart. I can not say enough. She was awesome from start to finish, and I would definitely use her as a an attorney if I need to again. Long story short, my boyfriend was facing a residency restriction, based on an event that happened ten years ago. I was calling around to different places in Appleton and Green Bay with the no luck. I then called her law office. The secretary that answered told me that she might have someone to help us. I talked with Kayla and she said that she would be interested. We met with her several times. She read through the material that we gave her and she also did some digging to get us the background that we needed to be successful. She also coached my boyfriend through the process. This made both him and I more comfortable. She was positive, but didn't sell us a dream. She covered multiple scenarios and how we would tackle each one. As someone who has been involved with attorneys in the past, this is by far the best one I have ever had. If you are ever in a pickle, give Kayla a call. She definitely has a passion for her career and her clients.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Menasha, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
