Life can bring many challenges. Sometimes stress and life circumstances lead to bad decisions. Bad decisions can lead to legal problems that turn life upside down. When that happens you need to turn to someone you can trust. Walter is a true professional with incredible passion for achieving the best possible result for his clients. He is relentless when it comes to looking at every possible outcome and will pursue what is in the best interest of his client. His experience and track record speaks for itself. I speak only from my experiences with Walt and Connie. All I can say is UNBELIEVABLE! They treat you like you are human. Almost like a family friend. Responsive is an understatement, 24/7 if it is necessary. Knowledge of DUI law beyond belief. Finding the best possible outcome always. All I can say in closing is Thank you for all you have done for me over the years! Anyone who has Piel Law office represent them will never be disappointed with their ability to achieve the best possible result!

I appreciate your patients with the payment plans and everything else you have done.... Walter is extremely professional and relentlessness over the years...I have used walter on multiple accounts for multiple different cases he Never once! Recommend me to take a deal always made sure I was satisfied with what ever offer Was given.... In the most recent situation Walt was able to negotiate a felony Charge that could have affected me for a lifetime to be dismissed.... I have used other lawyers but never once have I had someone that was willing to fight to make sure I was 100% satisfied with their  Representation.. Attorney Piel and his staff have been working with me for just over a year now. My trial is coming up extremely soon, and I feel obligated to say a little something as far as my experience with Walter. He has been extremely professional in terms of letting me know what to expect at all of my court hearings. From the moment I spoke with his secretary, Connie, on the phone I knew that I would be hiring him. After doing the initial consultation with Attorney Piel, I felt even more reassured that he would be the best option as far as representation of me in a courtroom. He is extremely knowledgeable as far as the OWI laws in Wisconsin and knows the ins-and-outs of an OWI case. Every time the DA has not been prepared in the courtroom with paperwork, or with an offer to plea the case out, (and this has happened numerous times), Walter has been fully equipped with the perfect statement to let everyone know that things were not being handled correctly. All in all, I would recommend Walter Piel to anyone out there who is going through an extremely difficult time. These types of cases have lasting effects on a person's future, and I feel that Attorney Piel is your best shot at mitigating the case down to where the punishment (if convicted) will be minimal in comparison to other attorneys. Before hiring Walter, I spoke with several different attorneys and not a single one of them gave me the same comfort, insight, and knowledge of my case like he did. On top of all that, he has been extremely reasonable with payments, meeting me in my hometown rather than having me drive up to his office, and has never left me in the dark with what he is thinking could happen next. 10/10 rating in my book. Hopefully all goes well at my trial, but even if the outcome isn't perfect, I would still recommend him to anyone. Thanks, Attorney Piel!

If you are looking for a great OWI attorney in Wisconsin, contact Walter Piel. Laws in Wisconsin are much different in Michigan where I live. I contacted a couple other attorneys before Mr. Piel and none of them seemed like they knew what they were talking about, plus their fees were much higher. One attorney I talked to recommended Mr. Piel for OWI cases and said he was the best in WI. I felt confident in Mr. Piel after my first conversation with him. Even though his office is in Milwaukee, he handles cases in other WI counties. Connie, his secretary, was extremely friendly and responded quickly when emailing the office. They were also willing to work out a payment plan with me. Mr. Piel defiantly knows WI laws on OWI’s and was able to get my case dismissed. I would highly recommend Attorney Piel.

I cannot recommend Adam Tutaj highly enough. He is, hands-down, an excellent attorney. From the moment I started working with Adam, it was apparent he had a genuine interest in the well-being of my business. Adam provided much-needed reassurance as a new business owner facing a messy legal landscape, and his plan and suggestions quickly put me at ease. Beyond his empathetic nature, Adam is highly knowledgeable and skilled in business and healthcare law. The thorough advice and guidance he provided every step of the way is immeasurable. Adam anticipated potential issues and provided effective solutions that protected my business interests. He was responsive and communicative, keeping me informed of the status of my legal matters and answering any questions I had along the way. Thank you, Adam, for all that you do!

Every other person we have had the pleasure of working with at Meisner Tierney Fisher has been very helpful and professional as well.

An honest, professional, and transparent law firm you can trust. I came here after another firm delivered some very questionable estate planning documents to me, among poor treatment and customer service. This firm had corrected every mistake and closed every hole the other firm left behind. Stafford really saved my butt here. Truly thankful. Such a kind team as well.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
