Paul has been representing the YWCA Madison in employment and contract issues since about 1997. I came on board in 1998 as the CEO and immediately got to know Paul and I have worked with him ever since. He has been exemplary in his work for our association. He is through, he renders excellent advise and is extremely knowlegeable in employment law including UC and EEOC. He has represented us in a number of cases and with his help we have had exceptional success. He is someone that I can turn to for advise and I wisely do. He takes the time necessary to prepare for each case, he asks very good questions. He always files our documents in a timely manner and he always keeps us informed of where we are in the process.

I’m incredibly grateful I found Mary Kennelly of Fox & Fox to represent me on my claim of employment discrimination. I’d never been involved in a lawsuit before and wasn’t sure where to turn, how to find a good attorney, or whether I even had a case. I had just been fired from my job after a series of troubling events with my employer, and it left me shaken. A friend who was familiar with situations like mine and the lawyers who handle them recommended Fox & Fox as the best. I reached out to them, and Mike Fox and Mary Kennelly agreed to represent me. I could not have had better guidance through the legal process, better advocates in the court room, or better partners to navigate a very difficult time in my life. Mike and Mary related to me on a very personal level, always attentive to the stress that I might feel as the litigation progressed through various stages.   They balanced empathy and rigor beautifully: both were supportive and sensitive to what I had been through, while maintaining their intense focus and legal perspective. Mike and Mary bring so much experience and intelligence to their work, and they were alert to aspects of the case I would never have thought of or known to bring up. They were consistently on point when arguing our case, presenting my testimony, and examining my employer’s witnesses. Their preparation and execution impressed me. More than anything, I was proud to be represented by attorneys with such integrity and high ethical standards. Mary and Mike fought for me with respect and grace. They consistently exceeded my expectations and made me feel valued, protected, empowered and understood. I highly recommend Fox & Fox to anyone looking for expert counsel.

In December of 2020 I was in a vehicle accident and suffered bodily injuries, emotional and mental stress. I knew I needed representation to know what to do and to be treated fairly. I had made countless phone calls to several lawyers seeking representation of my case. None was interested. Luckily, I found Lawyer Matt Devos Law Firm. I can not thank him and staff enough for taking my case. They were courteous, professional and answered all my questions. At first before I found Lawyer Devos, I was getting the run around. Thanks again Matt. I was back and forth to many doctors dealing with the pain, agony, bodily injuries and mental stress. Finding out I had pre existing conditions and my age being over 60 which was used against me by the other side. As much as the opposing side fought against me and tried to use whatever they could not to pay, Matt took all the odds against my case and used them favorably for my case as a success. Also, the vehicle that struck my vehicle was not a personal vehicle, it was a commercial vehicle. Thanks to Matt he has experience working these kinds of cases. This type of vehicle accident requires meeting time sensitive deadlines, which we met all of them on time and got all documents signed on time. He possess good communication skills, which is desperately needed in a lawyer. He kept me up to date. He kept on tasks speaking with the courts, judges, and the opposing side. He stayed on top of things. Matt is knowledgeable, professional and experienced in his work as a lawyer. I highly recommend him. He showed me patience toward the whole recovery process which took over 2 years. I really appreciate that he was so sympathetic. He was on my side and showed confidence when all kinds of odds were to me, looking against my case. We won, got a nice and sizeable settlement and I put it in a CD toward my retirement. I am so happy and pleased about that. I am grateful for the outcome of my case.

In 2019 I was in a head on collision with an intoxicated driver. I was injured very badly and spent a great deal of time in recovery. Selecting an attorney when you can't walk and have a brain injury is not easy. But Matt made the decision for me by being obviously the best person to hire. He came to my house and met with me which was preferable given my condition. After our initial meeting, Matt and I had meetings either by phone or online due to Covid. Due to the nature of my injuries it took me two years before I could pursue my settlement. During that time Matt was very helpful. First, he is very good at explaining in lay person's terms all that is going on. At no point did I not feel I had a good understanding of the legal process. Secondly, Matt helped me deal with how to live my life with this legal process hanging over my head. The psychology of going through a legal process is something no one anticipates and can be at times overwhelming. He is very patient and I greatly appreciated that. His assistant Abbie is also nothing by professional and kind. They both were supportive during the final phases of my settlement which were the hardest. Matt always stuck to the facts and made it very clear to me what I could and could not expect. This ultimately made the process so much better. I can't imagine what it would have been like if I had unrealistic ideas about my settlement/arbitration. If I had to do things all over again, I would not change anything.

Fox & Fox is a go-to law firm with an exceptional reputation, one earned client-by-client through belief and hard work. They have helped me and they have helped my friends. While they have succeeded in achieving the hoped for outcomes, they have been equally successful in tending to the emotional lives of the folks they represent. Resolution can mean many things and they understand and deliver on all aspects of it. I am grateful for what they have done for me and for others.

In 2014, my wife was notified by company management that her position within that company was going to be phased out. This was after she had completed almost three decades of dedicated professional service. The severance package and motive for termination made no sense to us so we decided to seek legal advice. I was retired from Twenty Eight years of employment within the Criminal Justice System and knew many attorneys but not the attorney best suited for this type of civil litigation. I made three separate inquiries, independent of each other about a lawyer or firm that we should seek out to best resolve this issue. They were a 1. RETIRED CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE 2. RETIRED ASSITANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY 3. PRACTICING ATTORNEY OF A NOTABLE LAW FIRM. All three of these individuals without hesitation stated Mike Fox. (MICHAEL R. FOX, FOX & FOX, S.C.) Our first meeting with Mike involved a detailed work history and any circumstances that may have led up to her termination at her place of employment. Mr. Fox detailed the possible remedies that we could seek and also what he believed to be both the merits and the negative possibilities involved in litigating this case to its conclusion. We were advised by Mr. Fox at the inception of this case that it may not be resolved for several years. During this entire period of time, Mr. Fox kept us updated regarding the status and progress of the proceedings minimizing the negative emotional impact the termination and the case itself would have on our lives. He could make us laugh when we were down or felt the legal system was tedious and unresponsive. We learned to trust Mr. Fox and his legal skills completely and our trust was well placed. Mr. Fox’s representation far exceeded our expectations. He could talk to us on a very personal level, putting aside the legal speak but he was dogged and fearless in his pursuit of our welfare. I would have no hesitation nor would my wife of highly recommending Attorney Mike Fox or his firm to represent anyone interested in the pursuit of a satisfactory resolution to any type of civil litigation. Respectfully, M.Bradley

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monona, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
