Jen assisted me by reviewing an estate case in which i was involved - based on her advice, i was able to get the Judge to significantly reduce an annual trustee bond requirement, which will save my family hundreds of dollars a year for the next 20 years.

I am so pleased that I found Matthew to help me when I was in a cat accident. He worked hard to be sure I received what I deserved! Matthew is very thorough and knowledgeable! Through the whole process he kept me updated and explained what was going on in terms the average person would understand. Hands down he's the best lawyer I've had!

In late September 2023 I was unfortunately in a head on car accident on the way home from work when an individual turned into my lane. I was left with a broken collar bone, which put me out of work immediately due to my occupation. Having no idea what to do, I decided to reach out to Matt's office due to Matt specifically practicing personal injury 100%. I would have never been made whole if I didn't reach out that day. All the medical bills and wage loss built up quickly in the two months I was out of work. My first phone call, I got the pleasure to speak with Abbie, Matts paralegal, and WOW was I impressed right away. After explaining why I was calling, Abbie cared about asking how I was doing and talked to me instead of just diving into the next steps right away. Then I got the pleasure to talk to Matt, same thing, just talked for a bit before diving into business. They are both in my eyes not just considered attorneys but outstanding individuals. Then Matt explained to me everything that would happen. Everything he explained that would happen was so easy to understand and stress free. And he did not miss a beat, everything happened as he explained. Which is a perfect example why his work ethic and professionalism in his occupation blew me away. Not to mention, all my stress went away immediately, Matt took that all away. He kept in touch on a regular basis. I didn't have to do much other thing give him information as needed. And most importantly to me personally, Matt helped me understand by reaching out for help is the right thing to do, not to feel guilty, but understand it's about being human. That showed me who is his as a person, not just as an attorney. Again, no way I would've been made whole if it wasn't for Matt and Abbie's thoughtful, conscientious, and hard work. There are so many variables in these situations but if you're willing to listen, learn, trust, and talk with Matt he will not let you down. He is the man to call for your personal injury. Thank you again DeVos Law!

In December of 2020 I was in a vehicle accident and suffered bodily injuries, emotional and mental stress. I knew I needed representation to know what to do and to be treated fairly. I had made countless phone calls to several lawyers seeking representation of my case. None was interested. Luckily, I found Lawyer Matt Devos Law Firm. I can not thank him and staff enough for taking my case. They were courteous, professional and answered all my questions. At first before I found Lawyer Devos, I was getting the run around. Thanks again Matt. I was back and forth to many doctors dealing with the pain, agony, bodily injuries and mental stress. Finding out I had pre existing conditions and my age being over 60 which was used against me by the other side. As much as the opposing side fought against me and tried to use whatever they could not to pay, Matt took all the odds against my case and used them favorably for my case as a success. Also, the vehicle that struck my vehicle was not a personal vehicle, it was a commercial vehicle. Thanks to Matt he has experience working these kinds of cases. This type of vehicle accident requires meeting time sensitive deadlines, which we met all of them on time and got all documents signed on time. He possess good communication skills, which is desperately needed in a lawyer. He kept me up to date. He kept on tasks speaking with the courts, judges, and the opposing side. He stayed on top of things. Matt is knowledgeable, professional and experienced in his work as a lawyer. I highly recommend him. He showed me patience toward the whole recovery process which took over 2 years. I really appreciate that he was so sympathetic. He was on my side and showed confidence when all kinds of odds were to me, looking against my case. We won, got a nice and sizeable settlement and I put it in a CD toward my retirement. I am so happy and pleased about that. I am grateful for the outcome of my case.

Paul has been representing the YWCA Madison in employment and contract issues since about 1997. I came on board in 1998 as the CEO and immediately got to know Paul and I have worked with him ever since. He has been exemplary in his work for our association. He is through, he renders excellent advise and is extremely knowlegeable in employment law including UC and EEOC. He has represented us in a number of cases and with his help we have had exceptional success. He is someone that I can turn to for advise and I wisely do. He takes the time necessary to prepare for each case, he asks very good questions. He always files our documents in a timely manner and he always keeps us informed of where we are in the process.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Monona, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
