This was the worst experience I’ve ever had with a law firm. I was blatantly lied to, misinformed, and led to believe things that were far from the truth. Due to the negligence of this law firm, my case was untouched for four months—without my knowledge. When I finally discovered this, I was upset, appalled, and deeply disturbed that a law firm would engage in such behavior. I was misled into believing my case was being actively worked on when, in reality, the attorney assigned to my case had left. They failed to inform me that a new attorney wouldn’t start for another month, and once he did, he was already backed up for over a month. I was left under the false impression for over four months that my case was being handled, but it wasn't. I was charged almost $400 for a “case/paperwork review,” yet the firm knew the attorney assigned to my case was leaving and wouldn’t be completing the review. They knowingly took my money for a service they never intended to provide, which is extremely disturbing. When I finally learned that the attorney had left, I was told that another lawyer would look over my case. However, based on his nonsensical email and phone call, it was clear that my case was not reviewed at all—not even 1%. This firm not only wasted my time but also added unnecessary distress to my life. As a single homeowner, my bills are piling up, and I was misled for over four months when I could have sought help elsewhere. If they had been honest from the start, I would have immediately found another firm to take on my case and get things moving. The dishonesty, negligence, and lack of respect this law firm demonstrated are beyond words. I strongly recommend avoiding this firm. Do yourself a favor and keep scrolling—you'll save yourself a lot of distress and money. I pride myself on giving honest reviews with detailed explanations to help others make informed decisions. While I often see 1-star reviews with no explanation, I want to ensure that readers know exactly why I rated this firm so poorly. My cats could’ve done a better job representing me, and they wouldn’t have charged me a dime. Once again, it’s highly disturbing that a law firm would act this way. I’ve dealt with bad businesses before, but this firm is easily in the top 10 of the worst. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. For your own good, keep scrolling—trust me, it will save you money and unnecessary stress.

A great team of professionals to help you. I had contacted Alan a few times before retaining him about my overtime complaint. He was extremely helpful with questions and directions. My case had the possibility of being taken by a district attorney for free. Alan instructed to let the DA take the case if they would, this showed me great intentions on his part that he was not out just for money but to help individuals as well. Thank you Alan and team for all that you have done. I am extremely pleased with the outcome. Without your help the case would have hit a dead end. I will definitely refer this team to others who need assistance.

Brianna was, in a word, exceptional. She reviewed documents from a separation agreement, insurance, benefits and other items. She made what was an extremely overwhelming situation easy to understand and clearly communicated actionable next steps on how we should proceed. She was also incredibly prompt in her response time, which was greatly appreciated. If you want an attorney who is an expert in her field, hire Brianna. I can’t say enough good things about her.

Mr. Erchull guided me with sound legal advice in how to handle a disgruntled employee. He assisted with advice, internal HR documents and verbiage that certainly helped resolve this negative situation in a positive manner...resulting in the desired outcome. Additionally, with his assistance this issue did not need to be settled in court. His knowledge and leadership was invaluable and I am very grateful that he was available to help me and my business.

I was a party to an employment agreement. Nick advised me in a wrongful discharge dispute related to that agreement, and represented me during negotiations and settlement. He is a great teacher, and helped me to understand the issues so that we could work as partners to set a reasonable settlement objective and chart a strategy for getting there. I quickly developed great confidence in him and was absolutely delighted with the outcome. Perhaps one of the best things about working with Nick is his demeanor. There were significant financial ramifications involved in this case and I was riding an emotional roller coaster. Nick's style is very calm and matter-of-fact, which helped me to stay in a head-space that was conducive to good decision-making.

Nick was a pleasure to work with. He was extremely knowledgeable and provided several options to obtain vacation pay that was promised however not delivered upon early termination. Nick was very responsive to my phone calls and emails and took time out of his day to make sure I understood my options to recoup lost pay. I would highly recommend Nick to family, friends and peers for any employment, labor disputes in which would need an attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New Berlin, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
