Potential issues with billing and communication, where clients felt overcharged or not properly addressed regarding billing concerns

2
Rare instances where clients felt the attorney was "going through the motions" or not actively participating in their case
“Moved quickly to start my case, and while present for all court appearances, seemed to be going through the motions more than actively participating.”

Margaret was incredibly impressive with my difficult case. Due to the complex nature, it lasted 28 months and Margaret stuck through it like a champ maintaining her drive to get everything I wanted in my divorce. We did end up avoiding trial but had we ended up in trial, I know without a doubt Margaret would have won. Her tenacity is amazing! Margaret got me what I wanted!

After leaving an abusive relationship, I knew I had to seek legal council to secure custody and the safety of my child. As soon as I met with Margaret O’Connor, I knew I would be in good hands. She is very professional, caring & well known around the court house. Anytime I needed her, she was always very responsive and helpful. She is strong, graceful and confident. In one of the most stressful and worrisome times in my life, or in that matter any parents life, she put me at ease and showed me with her actions in the court room that everything would be alright. My ex had also hired an attorney, but was no match for Margaret. She got me 100% sole custody and placement and all the stipulations I asked for, along with a generous amount of child support each month. Margaret was truly a guardian Angel and I can’t thank her enough for all that she has done for me and my family.

When seeking representation for an ongoing family court issue, I came across attorney Margaret O'Connor's website. Being that I'm a person with strong intuition, I felt that she would be the right fit for me. She was quick to get me into a consultation. I was put at ease from the moment I walked through her door, because of her calm yet confident demeanor. She was very professional and took extra time to thoroughly answer all of my questions. Her words were comforting in a very turbulent and stressful time. I knew that I was in great hands, so much so, that I wasn't even nervous in court with her by side. We did very well in court. The outcome exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for an attorney that has integrity, confidence, and who's extremely competent, look no further. You won't be disappointed.

Margaret O’Connor and Robert Keenan did a wonderful job in my divorce. Though it was filed jointly, there were some odd circumstances and they were helpful in navigating them and creating a situation where the judge signed off on our final agreement with few questions. Kind, professional, forthcoming, personable, and they listened to me and my requests on how I wanted the divorce to go. I would recommend them in a heartbeat. Thank you both for helping a tough situation go smoothly.

Atty Margaret O’Connor handled my divorce, which took well over a year. There were many complicated placement, tax and financial issues that were thrown at her and she knew exactly what to do every step of the way. It was a huge relief to have her to navigate this difficult time with me. She is professional but down-to-earth and easy to talk to. I trust her implicitly and handed everything over to her without hesitation. She answered questions at all hours and always made herself available to me when crises arose. She has a comprehensive knowledge of the law and a great rapport with everyone we came in contact with; court commissioners, guardian ad litems, social workers and other attorneys. I would, without hesitation, recommend Margaret O’Connor for any family law needs.

Should of went to jail but Mr. Cafferty got possesion charge dropped. Only had to deal with ccw permit violation and paraphernalia charge. Luckily I didn't go to jail and ended up on probation. Not happy about probation but better than going to jail. Very happy with his work. Could of been a lot worse with a public defender. Definitely worth the money even if you have to borrow or put it on the credit card. No amount is too much to have stuff dropped off your record. Something a public defender will never be able to do for you.

John Stutt has taken two cases of ours; a personal injury suit related to a traffic accident, and tenant eviction. John shows a great capacity for excellent legal skills along with a human touch, sensitive to the emotional aspects of legal action.

In the past, as a small business owner with the assistance of Attorney Stutt, I pursued collection for my business services against a corporation and successfully obtained a judgment. The Judge needed about a week to pass judgment, but it was somewhat of a novel case. I was pleased with the result.

Attorney Stutt is an experienced and knowledgable lawyer. I have had occasion to participate with him on a jury trial many years ago. He was then a young attorney and he prevailed in the case against a capable adversary. Over the years he has developed a reputation as an ethical and skilled lawyer. He will shortly be creating a trust for my family. I hold him in high regard.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Racine, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
