I had issues with my newly purchased home, and with the previous home owners/realtor. Therefore I needed someone to help me. I hired Rory, and I highly recommend. He asked me all the right questions, his assistants were pleasant to work with, he used his time wisely with MY MONEY. He sent me biweekly statements, I knew exactly how much money I was using up. Which was helpful for me. He was stern enough with the other lawyers and did everything in a timely matter. He was knowledgeable and thoroughly answered my questions, as anything with laws/regulations are very foreign to me. I appreciate his help, and I recommend him. Thank you Rory and team!

My situation was a slip and fall at the apartment complex I lived in. At first the company whom ran the apartment complex refused to do anything. So, I went to renters’ right’s and they would not take a slip and fall case. I was actually told the answer was to move. This took me back for a moment, but did not stop me. I did some more research and found the place I needed to write my concern was the “Department of Agriculture”. After the letter the company then emailed me to have the bills sent to the insurance company. By this time approximately a year and a half passed since the slip and fall and the bill was still not being taken care of. I knew renter’s rights was not going to help and trying to find a lawyer who would take my case was very slim. I called many lawyers and was turned away because of how much time had passed and a slip and fall is difficult to prove in Wisconsin. I must say I was very discouraged and felt hopeless. Being I felt a wrong needed to be addressed, I kept looking for a lawyer. So, by chance I called “Bye|Goff|Rohde” and after talking to Brian about my slip and fall. He took my case A Year and a half later. In the end it was a victory! Afterwards I asked Brian why he took my case. His said it was because of what I said. Bye the way, the slip and fall happened in 2018 and the settlement happened in 2022.

Brian and his staff were excellent to work with. Every time I contacted them they would talk to me and explain to me the things I had questions on so I could understand them. I would highly recommend him.

Brian is an excellent lawyer. Even the judge at the end of the trial told the jury they had “witnessed very good lawyering.” Brian presents with maturity and surety that seem to far exceed his years. I really respect the way he used his talent and coupled it with a competitive nature to get results and yet at the same time always showed genuine concern, consideration of my opinions, and patience with me during the entire process. Going to trial is nobody’s desire, but when I took the stand, Brian made it very easy for me to say the truth. I felt assured by his command of all the details and I truly appreciated his best efforts. Making that phone call to Bye, Goff, and Rhode was one of the best decisions. I would highly recommend Brian and I want to thank him and his staff. The results speak for themselves!!

Allyson was very informative about everything she did for me. I knew what to expect most every step of the way. I was very hesitant to use her because of her age and her being a newer lawyer, but to my pleasant surprise she was great. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a lawyer that is reasonably priced. I also had her to complete my parents Will shortly after using her for by business and it was under 300 dollars. When me and my husband did ours previously with another attorney we paid $1,800. It's nice to know there are good quality lawyers for a reasonable price.

I have worked with Max on multiple occasions and every time he has responded quickly, explained things clearly and made 100% sure that the documents stated exactly what I intended them to state. He has (and will continue to be) great to work with! I highly recommend.

Max is a pleasure to work with. He is knowledgeable about the law and the many facets that make no sense to a novice like me. He takes the time to explain in a simple way and gets to the point. He has represented my organization in several transactions, and he is our go to person. I completely trust Max and recommend him to anyone.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of River Falls, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
