Pros
1
Knowledgeable, experienced, and effective attorneys who achieve favorable outcomes for clients
“Attorney Ben Lutgen saved my license from a a ugly situation that many other attorneys turned down to help me with. Thankfully as long as I drive carefully and lawfully I will be able to drive and visit my out of state family.”
2
Responsive and communicative throughout the legal process, keeping clients informed
“Attorney Alexis Garuz took over my cases. Within two hours she had already contacted the DA and gave me an update, which was a great update. She got all the fines reduced to the minimum. She always kept me updated.”
3
Personable and empathetic, providing emotional support during difficult situations
“Attorney LaVoy was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and understanding throughout the entire process. While I was looking for an attorney to represent me, I had very short and uninformative calls with other firms. Attorney Lutgen spent a good amount of time on our first call explaining the legal process and what they could do to help me. I knew I was in good hands after that first call.”
4
Customized, thorough, and strategic approach to each client's unique case
“Attorney Lutgen took charge, lifted my spirits, fought for me and got me a sentence I did not think possible. I highly recommend both, the firm Kim and LaVoy and attorney Benjamine W. Lutgen”
5
Well-respected and recommended by other legal professionals
“I am a business/real estate lawyer and Kim & LaVoy has done an outstanding job representing the clients that I have referred to them. I highly recommend them.”
Cons
1
High costs and upfront fees may be a barrier for some clients
“Expensive”
2
Potential miscommunication or lack of transparency about outcomes and record
“Excellent and professional help when you need it most. Would highly recommend Jonathan LaVoy to handle any case. Unbeknownst to me (and also uninformed by counsel), while the original charge was amended, it still appears on my record, in plain sight.”

My experience with Kim and Lavoy was simply amazing! I worked with Jamie who was so attentive, quick, and thorough with fighting my ticket, getting it reduced and saving my license from suspension! She was very kind, and answered all my questions and emails very quickly! The job was done perfectly! If I have anymore citation needs I will be going with them forever! 10/10!!

I was originally charged with a first time DUI as well as 3 other driving charges. I was very nervous as I had never dealt with any criminal charges or lawyers in the past. Mr. Smith put my worries at ease and each time I needed to attend court I was amazed at his strategies and hard work to fight for me. Thanks to Mr. Smith my DUI was changed to a lesser charge of reckless driving and my other charges were dismissed. I have and would continue to highly recommend Mr. Smith.

I was arrested in Racine County for driving while intoxicated in July of 2018. Not knowing how to move forward, I decided to contact Attorney Richard Smith. He responded that day and offered me a phone consultation. Based on his knowledge, I decided that it was definitely in my best interest to hire him as my attorney. With his expertise and motivation to get the best deal for me, he was able to persuade the district prosecutor to lower the charges to reckless driving. I couldn't be happier and more relieved because of his excellent service to me. I highly recommend Attorney Smith to anyone in a similar situation.

Richard successfully defended me in a 1st offense OWI and Prohibited Alcohol Concentration case. The jury deliberated for less than 15 minutes before finding me not guilty. Richard's attention to detail and years of experience were invaluable to my case.

I had Samuel W. Benedict about 2-3 years ago. He was awesome to work with definitely knows his stuff, he is also very reliable and explains stuff about your case to you in a way that you understand so your not lost. He has gotten my case dropped to 2 years probation. I would definitely recommend him to anyone I know who needs a lawyer. 33 years of practice is amazing, which makes him knowledgeable. I was glad to be represented by him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
