Atty. Terri Nelson handled my Divorce and the end results were outstanding. Atty. Nelson is experienced, down to earth, and the consummate professional. I was so relaxed after leaving her office after my initial consultation and knew I would be well represented. Teri even returned my e-mails on her days off and always had my back! Her staff is also outstanding and always on their game. Thank you Teri!

I sat down and met with her prior to hiring her. She listened and took notes and made a promise that I had a solid, easy case. Initially she came across and empathetic and trustful, which shortly changed. My ex-husband almost emptied out a very large settlement I was awarded due to an accident. I paid the retainer fee and after that, she completely Changed. First, I no longer felt like she was representing me. My ex had a more experienced lawyer, and everything she told me we could do and she presented to the opposing lawyer, she would come back and say the lawyer would decline and present something else and Teri would always say she couldn't do better and we should accept. I always left feeling alone and defeated and in tears. She charged me for every little email, voicemail, discussion, her having to talk with the other attorney or any other discussions, etc. My bill came to roughly $20,000!!! My ex only got billed around $6,000! PLEASE, be careful. I wish I would've paid to break the retainer fee and hired a more experienced and dedicated attorney. Probably the biggest regret I have made.

Teri and her team were a God send during a long and difficult time. She was understanding. She listened to me and my emotions and responded quickly. She is very honest about the process and what to expect. She was with me every step of the way always giving me advice and explaining the options. I would recommend Teri and her team to anyone seeking a divorce attorney. Our custody issues could not have been in better hands as well. She is simply the best! " It is what it is" is one of Teri's phrases and I would add my favorite "it is what Teri said it is".

Teri is an excellent attorney. She handled my divorce in a very professional Way. She and her assistant are extremely responsive and kept me informed during the whole process. The best part about Teri is that she listens. She gives great advise, but lets you be involved in your divorce and is a partner in the process. In my divorce, I had some special issues to deal with, and she gave great advice. When I decided to to go in a direction she was not 100% bought into, she explained her opinion but then did what I asked. I could not have asked for a better partner in the process. I highly recommend her as a divorce attorney.

Teri is an intelligent, experienced, detail-oriented attorney who genuinely cares about my situation and has been very supportive throughout the process. Teri knows what matters to the court and got me excellent results that exceeded expectations. I can’t imagine using any other attorney for my divorce in 2001 and subsequent child custody issues. She has a good relationship with the judges and clerks at the courthouse. Her staff is excellent. She is extremely knowledgeable about the law. I would highly recommend Teri to anyone in need of a family law attorney. She's great and I'm lucky to have her for my lawyer! Thank you!

May is without a doubt a top notch lawyer. I never for a moment felt out of my element with legal jargon. Never ended a conversation or visit with questions. And at all times was aware "I" had someone in my corner that treated myself and my wife with the courtesy and concern of someone who actually cared what we were going through. No stone was left unturned in the course of our legal journey together. And I without a doubt, would recommend Attorney Lee to anyone whom asked. The Sallaz Family

I'm not sure where to begin. I think we all get to a point in our lives where we start to lose hope, hope in what's going on around us , hope in the situation we're in that isn't our fault and hope in ourselves in general. I had a couple thousand dollars of completely falsified/made up fees from my first apt. These made up fees got refereed to a debt collector which then ended up on my credit report which prevented anyone from wanting to rent to me. Again and again I was denied no landlord wanted anything to do with me which ended up affecting my life horrifically. What could I do? Nothing . That's when I was referred to Heidi. She got my case and IMMEDIATELY got to work. She knew what she was talking about that was instantly apparent and she knew the law, which made me feel like I was in good hands. She has been empathetic, non judgemental and understanding through this whole thing process. She has worked non stopped, kept me updated every step up of the way and has now actually got the fee removed from my credit report AND got me a settlement. As I type this my eyes fill up with tears because I don't think I can in words relay to Heidi how great she is and the difference shes made in my life and turning it back around when no matter how hard I tried I couldn't. Thanks for giving me hope again Heidi but most importantly thanks for giving me my life back.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
