I hired Stacy for a complicated custody situation. She did not back down and represented me as a professional. Being a single dad and wanting the same rights to my son as the mother, it was an up hill battle but she did a great job navigating a complicated case. Thank you Stacy, for everything you did for me and my Son!

The impact that a great lawyer can have on one’s life is unmeasurable. This journey wasn’t easy and truly tested my patience and at some moments faith, but I trusted Stacy’s word and now I can finally stop the worries and have my son with full custody. I have had the opportunity to work with Stacy on several occasions over the last three years and she is hands down the one and only lawyer I trust to represent me. Stacy has guided and mentored me through difficult situations that I was faced with to ensure I did what was always in the best interest of my son. She has told me the truth at times when I did not want to hear it, but knowingly it was the right advice to take. She encouraged me to teach myself how to separate my emotions and stay professional at all times. As I said this has been a journey, but I chose the right path to take and that was to hire Stacy.

After working with another attorney for months, I was getting discouraged so I met with Stacy to discuss my uphill chances, as a dad and a defendant, to get primary custody of my infant daughter. Stacy immediately demonstrated her superior legal expertise. Stacy demonstrated her outstanding ability to formulate a winning legal strategy by focusing on the most important aspects of my case - what a breath of fresh air. She quickly developed an overview and demonstrated her excellent analytical skills by pulling the relevant pieces from the large volume of written material in a matter of days. Stacy read everything! She did not cut corners. Stacy showed her superb organizational skills by summarizing the evidence in a systematic spreadsheet, a mere glance showed in a clear fashion how the evidence fit together in a convincing manner. My case is considered difficult and complex, the seasoned judge wrote that he had not encountered in one case so many difficult aspects. Stacy was very prompt in her communication, she works in real-time, she never left me hanging. Stacy demanded transparency and she always performed due diligence, if I could not provide evidence to confirm a claim it was not going to be used. Period. This speaks volumes about Stacy’s integrity. I am very familiar with Stacy’s tremendous work ethic and her outstanding ability to present the essence of disparate pieces of information in a concise, persuasive manner. Stacy’s motions were clear, compelling and always filed in a timely manner. Before trial, Stacy prepared me for what to expect on the witness stand and how to conduct myself during the cross-examination by the opposing counsel. This speaks volumes for Stacy’s passion for her work. It was in the courtroom that I saw the same professional side of Stacy, her cross-examination of witnesses was professional and devastatingly effective and without any of the horse and pony show elements used by the opposing counsel. In the weeks leading up to trial we were exchanging dozens of email a day to go over the hundreds of pages of last minute records that we received from the opposing side. To say that Stacy thoroughly prepared my case for trial is not an understatement. Stacy made her capable and efficient staff available to me for small and big things related to the case. I admire how personable Stacy is, her calm demeanor is very reassuring. I trust her. My confidence in her legal competence is absolute.

It's not common to talk with a lawyer in regards to a legal situation when the lawyer has nothing to gain from the conversation, but this is exactly what happened when I contacted Joshua Merseal. I called Josh and he quickly and politely fit me into his schedule later that day. When we spoke later Josh took his time listening to my situation and provided answers to every question I asked of him. Once we were ending the phone call I asked if he would be able to take this case on. He stated that he would like to, but needed to put the majority of his time towards a large case which he expected to end in February. In the end I was able to receive quality legal assistance from an individual, who I believe, just enjoys helping others.

My review of Mr. Merseal's legal representation Joshua is greatly knowledgeable in criminal defense. He showed concern for my legal issue, explained what process we should follow and how we should move forward. Joshua treated me with attention handling my serious legal issue with extreme caution giving me several options to choose from and informed me which one would work best in my case. He did exactly what we agreed to and the outcome was in my favor my family's money was well spent for his time and efforts. I am glad we chose Mr. Merseal to help us get through this hardship you defiantly need him on your side of the court room. Joshua is well educated ( on both sides of the fence so to speak knowing the defensive and prosecution.) He knew what path to search out to get my family the best possible outcome. Mr. Merseal had my felony charge dismissed to a misdemeanor and ultimately saved me from losing everything. Need I say more? Very Satisfied very Trustworthy......

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Laramie, Wyoming?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
